Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. You can see the blue covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in very good shape, no rubbing. The page edges look very good. The top page edge has a handful of teeny tiny specks, not much of anything, no bearing upon the pages. There is a little bump at the front top corner and a small crease below the rear top corner. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a light, soft blue. They are very clean. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them a number of times without finding any instances of soiling. The bump at the front top corner created a small crease just below the top corner of the front inside cover and a very light, small crease just off the tip of the top corner of some early pages. The bump at the top corner of the rear cover did not cause a crease on the pages, just a light crease below the top corner of the inside cover. The pages are nicely bright as well as being clean. There are no placeholder creases. There is one marking, the small stamp of the man I purchased the book from, Rabbi, scholar and psychoanalyst Alan W. Miller. There are no attachments of any kind. And there is no writing to be found anywhere in the book. There is a section of ten photographs, all of them are in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. It looks very clean. There really isn't any wear that needs to be called out. The flaps are in very nice condition, very clean. There is one tiny (1/8th") tear off the top edge of the front flap, just adjacent to the front middle edge, pretty inconspicuous. The jacket is not priced or clipped. The essays are written by a good number of people including Sir Alec Guinness, Donald Hall, Anthony Hecht, Robert Pinsky, and Louise Gluck. Here are some of the others: T. S. Eliot himself (Tradition and the Practice of Poetry), Brand Branshard, Jewel Spears Brooker, Cleanth Brooks, Ronald Bush, Peter Du Sautoy, Wallace Fowlie, Christopher Fry, Donald Gallup, Valerie Eliot, Harry Levin, Linda Leavell, Lesley Higgins, M. L. Rosenthal, Grace Shluman, Janet Adam Smith, Stanley Sultan, Leonard Unger, Austin Warren, Alan Weinblatt, Michael Ryan, and Stephen Berg.
