An account of the 1932-33 Bodyline cricket series. Bodyline, also known as fast leg theory bowling, was a cricketing tactic devised by the English cricket team for their 1932-33 Ashes tour of Australia, created to combat the extraordinary batting skill of Australia's Don Bradman. A bodyline delivery was one in which the cricket ball was bowled, at pace, at the body of the batsman in the expectation that when he defended himself with his bat a resulting deflection could be caught by one of several fielders standing close by on the leg side. Add to basketPaperback octavo, very good condition, black & white text-photos & drawings, few light impressions front cover, minor edgewear. 293 pp. Edward Docker writes about 'furphies': tall stories, unsubstantiated rumours and mistaken or half-understood notions (including of events overseas), which have always abounded in Australian and Pacific history. The Furphy water-carts passed through the streets of Shepparton in Victoria in the year 1900 to assist farmers in time of drought. Fourteen years later when World War 1 broke out a new task was supplying water to troops awaiting despatch to battlefields overseas. Hence the name 'furphy' for some of the tall stories the drivers of such carts passed onto these volunteer soldiers in lieu of more reliable information.

Add to basketFirst edition: octavo; hardcover, with gilt spine titles and illustrated endpapers; 165pp., with a monochrome frontispiece and 16pp. of plates likewise, Mild wear; text block and page edges lightly toned and top edge dusted; mild offset to the endpapers. Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn with some spotting; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Bodyline in its most developed form was devised primarily to deal with Don Bradman. Douglas Jardine, the English captain, planned the use of his formidable fast bowlers, particularly Douglas Larwood, with meticulous care before the 1932-33 test series which was to stir up a whirlwind of controversy and bitterness. The book, which also gives a perspective of Bradman's career before and after bodyline, concentrates on the great Australian batsman's role in meeting the challenge posed by the English team and their tactics. It vividly recreates with ball by ball accounts of the crucial matches the turbulent and rancorous atmosphere of those controversial tests.

Add to basketOctavo; paperback; 160pp., with many colour and monochrome illustrations. Minimal wear to edges. Near fine. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Raymond Dart was born above his father's fruit shop in Queensland but went from these humble beginnings to become one of the most groundbreaking palaeontologists of the Twentieth Century. Mostly ignored in his own country, Dart's excavations and discoveries in Africa not only filled in the gaps of how human beings evolved but vindicated many of Darwin's theories regarding that process. He discovered Australopithecus and posited the notion of a "cousin species" to Homo sapiens, igniting debate about whether or not human violent tendencies stem from territorial aggression between these races. This book resolves the oversight of Dart by his national peers, placing him back firmly amongst the giants of evolutionary science.

Add to basketOctavo, blue hardcover, xiii, 178 pp., illustrated with black-and-white photographs, some maps and two appendices included. Spine ends slightly bumped and rubbed, corners and lower edges of covers slightly rubbed, light spotting on top and fore-edge of text block, top edges of dust-jacket slightly worn and torn without loss of text: otherwise a very good copy. First edition, signed and inscribed by Australian aviator Nancy Bird. Edward Wybergh Docker recounts the stories of the people behind Australia's air ambulance, with a focus on the history of services to the New South Wales outback. Among others, he introduces us to Reverend Stanley Drummond, who founded the Far West Children's Health Scheme; Sid Coleman, who in Burke in the 1930s flew the local doctor to his more distant calls; and Nancy-Bird who set up an air ambulance in 1935. The first leaf is signed and inscribed by Nancy Bird and reads: "To Stephen Craggs, Best wishes, Nancy Bird, 1984".
