Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. THE NEW ZEALAND MAORI COLLECTION IN THE PEABODY MUSEUM OF SALEM, Ernest Stanley Dodge (Assistant Curator of Ethnology), illustrations, 1941. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in near fine condition with no dog ears, marks, or tears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This was a museum library book (stamp on title page, call number sticker on front wrap, but no check-out forms). The wraps are in fairly good condition (edge crinkling, 3 marks at top of front wrap, smudge on back cover, tear at top of spine). 10 x 7, 79 pages, 8 ounces XX [From the foreword] THE New Zealand Maori Collection in the Peabody Museum of Salem is the fourth of a series of catalogues giving detailed descriptions and illustrations of the specimens in the Polynesian collections in this Museum. Many of the objects in these collections are of more than average interest because their early known date of accession prohibits any European influence upon them. Some of these specimens were collected as curiosities in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and given to the Museum of the Salem East India Marine Society. The Society's Museum was founded in 1799 and after an existence Of sixty-eight years its collections were Permanently deposited with The Trustees of the Peabody Academy of Science. The latter name was changed by act of Legislature in 1915 to Peabody Museum of Salem. East India Marine Hall, with its later additions, has been the home of the Museum since 1824. Salem, during the first half of the nineteenth century, had an extensive trade passing through the Pacific Islands to China and occasionally local vessels went to Australia and New Zealand. Although some of our local specimens were brought back by these Vessels others came by way of whalers, from New Bedford's large whaling fleet, which touched at New Zealand for wood and water. The four largest early accessions to the New Zealand collection were given by Captain Daniel Ward in 1802, Captain William Richardson in 1807, Captain William Putnam Richardson in 1812, and Captain Benjamin Vanderford in 1823. Besides these large accessions, numerous single objects were donated before 1860 and many of the articles added to the collection during the last forty years have a pretty clear history dating from the early nineteenth century.
