Jacket has minor rubbing head and tail front panel. Octavo; xiv + 122 pp. First edition. Gilt lettering on black cloth boards. Embossed ex libris seal on half-title page, with note in soft pencil; else, text is as new. Arrowsmith was an authority on Greek drama, and he devoted particular attention to Alcestis. His excellent introduction discusses the moral content and the literary and historic context of the play. A volume in the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series; William Arrowsmith, General Editor. From jacket notes: "In these volumes, the tragedies of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides are translated as never before by men and women who are themselves poets. Each poet-translator is also a classical scholar, or has collaborated with a well-known scholar. The resulting series re-creates the entire extant body of Greek tragedy as though it had been originally written by ancient masters wholly at home in the English language of our time . Each volume includes a full critical introduction; commentary on difficult passages; stage directions; and a glossary of the mythical names and geographical references encountered in the dialogue.".

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition. Page ridges foxed. 1973 Hard Cover. x, 88 pp. Iphigenia in Tauris is a drama by the playwright Euripides, written between 414 BC and 412 BC. It has much in common with another of Euripides's plays, Helen, as well as the lost play Andromeda, and is often described as a romance, a melodrama, a tragi-comedy or an escape play. Although the play is generally known in English as Iphigenia in Tauris, this is, strictly speaking, the Latin title of the play, the meaning of which is Iphigenia among the Taurians. There is no such place as "Tauris" in Euripides' play, although Goethe, in his play Iphigenie auf Tauris ironically utilising this translation error, posits such a place. The name refers to the Crimean Peninsula (ancient Taurik?).
