1 lettre autographe signée 1 In-4 13/03/1772 très bon Lettre de l'abbé Expilly, dans laquelle il expose les recherches sur la généalogie de son correspondant, apparenté à MM. Du Barry et d'Arcambal. «Faites bien attention, je vous prie, à celui [le tableau] qui établit votre alliance avec Mr Du Barry et en même temps avec Mr d'Arcambal. Ce colonel est du Bousquet, dont j'analyse ici la généalogie, mais j'ai lieu de le présumer, parce que je vois les Du Bousquet, seigneurs de Saint-Annes, aussi bien que Mr Du Barry [.]». 1 lettre autographe signée 1 p. 1/3 In-4 04/01/1772 pliure centrale L'abbé Expilly, historien et géographe, prodigue des conseils pour se présenter au marquis de Monteynard et au duc d'Aiguillon, afin de demander le titre de lieutenant-colonel : "Faites valoir vos services, vos blessures, mais dites vous très-bien, & ne faites pas paraître que vous soyiés sujet à la moindre indisposition". Il faut voir aussi M. Charlot, faire intervenir le marquis de Chabrillan, faire valoir ses parentés, etc. M. de Nogaret, qui va le recevoir, "est un homme d'un mérite supérieur, très judicieux & très-pénétrant. Parlés-lui avec dignité & avec élévation, ferme & avec toute l'assurance que je vous connois. Marqués-lui de la déférence à ses conseils [.]". Expilly joint la copie autographe de la lettre qu'il a reçue de M. de Nogaret. Géographe et historien.

12mo., (4 6/8 x 2 2/8 inches). Text within woodcut borders. Six fine engraved folding maps (creased), woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary French speckled calf, gilt (spine rubbed). Provenance: near contemporary manuscript poem about a tree on the recto of the free rear endpaper. First published in 1757, this is an attractive copy of this little atlas containing a double-hemisphere world map dated 1760 showing the incomplete coastlines of Australia and New Zealand; maps of Europe, France, Africa, Asia; and North and South America. With a long chapter on America which after giving a brief history of its discovery continues with descriptions of the territories claimed by Britain, Denmark, Spain, Holland, Portugal, Prussia; "l'Amerique independant" including California, the Amazon, and "Terre-Magellanique"; and France, including New France (in Canada) and Louisiana. There is also an account of the "Terres Australes vers le Pole Antarctique" which mention New Guinea, New Holland, Papua, and Carpentaria. Expilly was a member of the Societe Royal de Belles-Lettres de Nancy, held a number of government posts throughout his life which enabled him travel widely gathering information on population, climate and topography which he compiled in several geographical titles related to France and the rest of the world.
