Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Handsome and important account of the Royal Marines and their predecessors. Two volumes by Colonel Cyril Field from earliest times,includes taking of Gibraltar 1704, Trafalgar 1805, Algiers, China war, War with Russia 1954, Ashantee war, Egypt, Ireland, Sudan, China 1900, Defence of Peking legations etc. c.650pp., ills., coloured plates, maps, appendices, index, corrigenda, Third volume dealing with the Great war and immediately after, 492pp., coloured frontispiece, ills., sketches, appendices, index. Separate Map case with 7 folding maps. Note all four volumes, three text and one map are in matching contemporary full morocco with gilt tooling and raised bands to spine. There is foxing in all volumes and volume one has three uniform cards added to a blank page with dates in ink below, Neat bookplates to Colonel Keeson who purchased the volumes in 1924 (sales details, receipts and interesting handwritten letters/notes from members of the publication committee to Keeson included). All the bindings are in exceptionally nice condition. The most sumptuous and expensive bindings produced for the history and to find all four in matching bindings in at least very good+ condition is very rare. Obviously a very heavy set.
