Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION/2ND PRINTING of Luther High Spot, in blue cloth with 7th Cavalry sabers on cover in gilt, in yellow dust jacket with Custer in buckskin, frontis. photo plus 15 additional illus. (listed), 285pp. Luther #64. O'Keefe #869. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Author was the daughter of Lt. Francis M. Gibson, second in command of Benteen's H Company of the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn. This book shares the memoirs of the author's mother, Katherine Gibson. It contains the text of a critically important letter Lt. Gibson wrote to his wife on July 4, 1876, just 9 days after Little Big Horn. There is valuable information in the contents of this letter, such as Wallace predicting Custer's death on June 22, 1876; the Benteen's orders were to go to the left to the Little Big Horn valley, then "we were to hurry and rejoin the command as quickly as possible"; and that they could hear the shots of the Custer battle at the Reno-Benteen defense area. The letter damns Reno and praises Benteen's leadership, but for historians, Gibson's alleged cowardly behavior in the hilltop fight may have removed much credibility from his remembrances. Much on the personalities of the 7th Cavalry officers. A must read for all students of the battle. Great collectible.
