Book
Softcover. Condition: New. Mount Union was the location of the interchange between the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad and the famous narrow-gauge line, the East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company. But in addition to the East Broad Top, there were 3-ft. gauge tracks serving the brick manufacturers of Harbinson-Walker Refractories Company and General Refractories. Also, the Pennsylvania Railroad operated a tie treatment plant with its own 2-ft. gauge railroad. As the Pennsylvania Railroad relocated its mainline around the center of town and the tie plant and brick manufacturers have closed, Mount Union is not the railroad center it once was. This book is a history book with extensive text and many B&W photographs from the past up until the Conrail era to supplement the text. Contents: Mount Union.a Pulsating Railroad Town in 1906!, pp. 6-8, Introduction, pp. 9-18, Tracks from West to East, Tracks from West to South, pp. 19-60, Narrow Gauge Capital of the East, pp. 61-62, Two-Foot Gauge Tracks at the Tie Plant, pp. 63-70, Harbinson-Walker's Narrow Gauge Tracks Through the Mist, pp. 71-84, The Elimination of Mount Union's Deadly Thoroughfare, pp. 85-116, A Perfect Recipe for Disaster: Train Wreck of 1917, pp. 117-120, Tracks at Mount Union's Forgotten Silica Brick Plant, pp. 121-126, Sandwiched Between the EBT Tracks and the Juniata River, pp. 127-129, Acknowledgements, pp. 130-132, Bibliography, pg. 133. Softcover. Condition: New. Softcover, 108 pages, 11 x 8.5 in., Black-and-White images. Frank Kyper, author of three earlier books on the East Broad Top, covers the reincarnation of the railroad in the 2020s. It also ties up some loose historical ends, using some newly-available documentation and research, coupled with Kyper's firsthand recollections of the EBT in the 1950s, to cover previously obscure topics. This book brings the written history of the EBT up to present by filling in historical gaps. Full of black & white photography, this book is a must-have for any EBT or narrow-gauge collector!.
