Edges of boards slightly soiled; damp mark to lower edge of rear board and spine. In good paper covered slip case; some rubbing to edges and damp staining to panels. Textblock edges untrimmed. Signature in ink to limitation page. A tight copy; printed on heavy rag paper, clean interior. good to very good Limited edition manuscript, personally published by Grove and signed by him on the limitation page. Originally from West Prussia (now Poland), Felix Greve emigrated to Canada in 1912 and assumed his pseudonym Frederick Philip Grove. He successfully hid his heritage, claiming to be Anglo-Swedish, until 25 years after his death in 1946.

No date but OCLC and others state 1925 for this 1st Canadian edition (the American edition was also issued that year). With the very scarce dust jacket showing a tired farmer in a green ruled frame. Dust jacket (in mylar) is intact but has some wear and chipping at the edges, bit of loss to bottom corners and spine tips. Book itself is dark blue textured cloth with bright gilt showing cattails. Bit of fade to spine covers and light dusting at corners and spine head and tail. Interior is clean and unmarked. Half title has a slight crease across bottom corner, paper a little toned, otherwise sturdy, clean and very good. Extremely scarce with the dust jacket. The back cover announces a "new writer of North Country romance" and continues "Sturdy young Niels loved Ellen, daughter of a pioneer. But she would have none of him; and his thwarted passion took him to a darker love and into danger to body and soul. Vivid, thrilling, this story breathes the lure of the forest and the charm of a hardy people." Grove was a German immigrant who found a role as the "adopted son" of Canada and the "spokesman for the young Canadian nation" and its increasingly multicultural face. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 341 pages.
