Slightly cocked. Some edge soiling. This is one of The Life of Science Library. This is Publication Number 16 Historical Library Yale University School of Medicine. Benjamin Sillman (August 8, 1779 - November 24, 1864) was an early American chemist and science educator. He was one of the first American professors of science, at Yale College, the first person to distill petroleum in America, and a founder of the American Journal of Science, the oldest continuously published scientific journal in the United States. Sillman was an early supporter of coeducation in the Ivy League. Although Yale wouldn't admit women as students until over 100 years later, he allowed young women into his lecture classes. His efforts convinced Frederick Barnard, later President of Columbia College, that women ought to be admitted as students. Benjamin Sillman played two prominent roles in the development of this country. In the nineteenth century he fostered the sciences more persistently and effectively than any other figure, particularly in relation to their applications to industry and to the uncovering of the vast natural resources of the North American continent. More important was Sillman's role as an educator, for through his efforts in teaching the sciences at Yale he lade the foundations of graduate education in the United States. This biography is offered as a timely reminder of the man who provided the initial impetus which has been in such large measure responsible for the present international prestige of the United States in science.
