This near fine unmarked copy is bound in green cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, and gilt finch to the upper board, tight, white, bright and square. A dust wrapper is not present. Laid in is a cutting from the Daily Telegraph Saturday August 13 1977 about Gilbert White by J.H.B. Peel and another cutting from the Hampshire Telegraph for Thursday September 13th 1962 about Selborne and its people. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. 1924 edition of Gilbert White's pioneering account of the ecology around his family home at Selborne, Hampshire originally published in 1789 and set out in a series of letters to Thomas Pennant, the leading zoologist of the time, and Daines Barrington, a Fellow of the Royal Society. They are significant for the scientific methods employed - relying on observation as opposed to folk wisdom - and as a close study of a small area, with some new insights into animal behaviour and even the weather. Green cloth hardcover with gilt picture to front and title to spine in good/very good condition. Some dark stains to the front and rear along with some lighter faded areas mainly to the front and an area on the spine. Corners are slightly turned and bumping to the spine ends. The spine has an indentation in the bottom quarter. The dust jacket is fair. Tears, creases and shelf wear to all edges, mainly the top edge. Heavy handling overall. Internally the pages are clean but foxing is present to the text block edges. Date inscribed to the ffep.

Illustrated with eighty-five photographs on plates. Collated complete. A compilation of letters detailing the natural history of the area around White's family home at the vicarage of Selborne in Hampshire. The letters are intended for Thomas Pennant, a leading British zoologist of the day, and Daines Barrington, an English barrister and Fellow of the Royal Society. Written by Gilbert White, a pioneering English naturalist, ecologist, and ornithologist. With notes by Richard Kearton, a British naturalist. Illustrated by Cherry and Richard Kearton, brothers, a pair of British naturalists and some of the world's earliest wildlife photographers. They developed innovative methods to photograph animals in the wild and published the first natural history book to be entirely illustrated by wild photographs in 1895. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Small splits in the cloth at the head and tail of the spine. Fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Small marks to the title page and light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good. book.

In very good minus original bright green cloth boards with gilt titles and gilt vignette of cottage to front; bird on branch to spine. The boards are firm, straight and quite clean; corners bumped and a little frayed. Slightly marked end papers; brief dedication on front free end paper. Age-toned top cut edge; the fore and tail edges are fairly clean. Very good text block and remarkable for age with clean, bright white pages with "123 illustrations from photographs taken direct from nature by Cherry and Richard Kearton". Frontispiece with tissue guard is tanned, otherwise no other markings to text. Adverts to rear. Without jacket. Scarce editoin.

First thus: a reissue of the Keartons' 1902 edition of "the most widely known book on the joys of outdoor life in the English language," according to Richard Kearton's two-page introduction to this volume, which talks of changes in Selborne, and the influx of American visitors. Still including his introduction to the 1902 edition, and with a different selection of 85 photographs by the brothers, Richard and Cherry Kearton, from the 123 that appeared in the earlier edition. Inscribed by Richard Kearton in the year of publication to his "old friend, Leonard P. Moore, Esq." Offsetting to inscription page; heavy foxing to page edges and prelims; a bit of sunning to cloth; and a short tear at the rear upper joint. A good copy. Laid in is a flyer for a 1993 exhibition marking the bicentenary of the death of Gilbert White. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.
