No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 80 x 193 mm. HANWAY, Jonas [1712-1786] (British Philanthropist). Printed & Manuscript Document: Victualling payment receipt, dated July 2, 1782, signed by Hanway & 2 others. Hanway was one of the most notable of the eighteenth century English philanthropists; his zealous efforts on behalf of social reform were many and varied: he was a chief promoter of the Marine Society, the Magdalen Hospital, plans for benefiting chimney-sweeps, reforming the Foundling Hospital, establishing Sundays schools and petitioning for the relief of destitute Canadians at Montreal after the great fire of 1765, and during the American Revolutionary War, and he helped to establish the Society for the Encouragement of British troops, an organization which provided clothing and prayer books for the soldiers. The most ambitious and successful of Hanway's philanthropic schemes was the Marine Society, founded in 1756, for the purpose of maintaining a stable supply of seamen for the navy through the recruitment of impoverished boys and young men. During the course of the Seven Years' War, some 10,000 sailors were fitted out by the Society, and Hanway, in reward for his services, was made Commissioner of the Victualling Office in 1762. Signed by Author(s).

Modern quarter-calf over plain paper-covered boards, flat spine in six compartments between decorative gilt bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt; all edges stained red, end papers renewed. Title page and preliminaries lightly foxed, but contents otherwise clean and bright, the binding tight and firm. A splendid, wide-margined copy. ESTC Citation No. T127188. Gibson's Library, p. 144. Goldsmiths'-Kress 9083. Cox I, p. 19. Hanway was both a widely traveled merchant, with connections to the Russia Company, and a philanthropist whose causes included foundlings, prostitutes, and the climbing apprentices of chimney sweeps. His mother's death, in 1755, prompted him to return to Portsmouth where she was buried, that sojourn served as inspiration for this, his second book, to which he appended An Essay on Tea. Hanway describes many of the places he visited (including Salisbury, with its great cathedral, and Stonehenge), with digressions on tombstones, sacred music and oratorios, divine poetry, temperance, lapdogs, false grief, the ruling passion of women, and much else. His Essay on Tea indicts the beverage for causing everything from insomnia, weak nerves, and scurvy to bad teeth, and proposes 'Herbs of our own growth in lieu of tea.' (Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, and other ardent tea-drinkers criticized these eccentric views in The Idler and other publications.) N. B. The women worked at services and crafts to help provide financial support for the house. They were also given a small sum of money for their work. First Edition. The most ambitious and successful of Hanway s philanthropic schemes was the Marine Society, founded in 1756, for the purpose of maintaining a stable supply of seamen for the navy through the recruitment of impoverished boys and young men. During the course of the Seven Years War, some 10,000 sailors were fitted out by the Society, and Hanway, in reward for his services, was made Commissioner of the Victualling Office in 1762. The present work sets forth Hanway s elaborate proposal for the establishment under the auspices of the Marine Society of County Naval Free Schools, in which poor boys would be given proper moral and religious instruction and taught the rudiments of seamanship and agriculture. One hundred and fifty acres of wasteland in each shire would be expropriated for the purpose. Hanway s book not only lays out the rules and goals of the schools, but details curriculum, provides architectural plans, and suggests appropriate songs, prayers, and hymns for the young lads. The generation of Englishmen so trained would then not only be capable of defending their homeland, but would also be upstanding, industrious, and productive members of society: "As islanders, we should aspire to the highest relish of the sea, whatever our occupations on shore may be! The scholars in question, being taught how to gain by labour on both elements, may be able to raise their aged parents heads, by plowing the waves, as well as the fields, and guard the watery frontiers of those very grounds which they may have rendered fruitful by their own hands."Goldsmiths 12516. Kress B.596. See Merrill Distad, Jonas Hanway and the Marine Society in History Today, XXIII: 6 (June 1973). Signed by Author(s).
