VERY GOOD INDEED. 63pp. [ Rosley Books for Antiquarian books, Literature, Theology and History. ] FROM THE LIBRARY OF REVEREND PROFESSOR Canon Ronald Haydn Preston (1913-2001) died at age of 88, was the Church of England's leading authority on social ethics. Ronald Haydn Preston was born on March 12 1913. Having graduated with a degree in Economics from the LSE in 1935, he spent three years working as industrial secretary of the Student Christian Movement (SCM), then a large and influential ecumenical body. Drawn to Holy Orders, he then went to Ripon Hall, Oxford - noted for its liberal theological outlook - and, as a member of St Catherine's Society (now College), took a First in Theology. From 1940 to 1943 he was a curate in Sheffield, then returned to the SCM as its study secretary and editor of The Student Movement - tasks for which his combination of political, economic and theological skills equipped him perfectly. By 1948, Preston's reputation was such that he secured an appointment as Lecturer in Ethics at Manchester University - a post he held for the next 22 years, for the first 15 of which he was also Warden of St Anselm Hall, a residence for theological students. Preston was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity by Oxford University in 1983. His literary output was extensive. Besides innumerable articles in theological journals, contributions to dictionaries and symposia on subjects such as strikes, penal reform, capital punishment, artificial insemination and the welfare state, he wrote several substantial books. These include Technology and Social Justice (1971); Religion and the Persistence of Capitalism (1979); The Future of Christian Ethics (1987); Religion and the Ambiguities of Capitalism (1991); and Confusions in Christian Social Ethics (1994). **.
