Book Description: Heinemann, London, 1937. Hardcover. First edition. A couple of spots of foxing to the foredge, still easily fine in an attractive, fine dustwrapper with a couple of very small tears and tiny nicks. A lovely copy of the true first edition of a novel set in Sydney, Australia in the 1830s, where a young Irishman takes up with a strange household. Basis for the atypical 1949 Alfred Hitchcock film featuring Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Michael Wilding. Simpson co-wrote the novel *Enter Sir John*, also filmed by Hitchcock, and she wrote the dialogue for his films *Sabotage* and *Murder*. Very scarce, and exceptionally so in this condition. Book Description: London, William Heinemann 1937., 1937. First edition. Hardcover. Some light foxing on the edges, bookseller's label on the front fixed endpaper, o/w very good in good price-clipped dustjacket with some professional restoration to short tears and small pieces at the spine tips, flap fold-ins and bottom edge of the back panel (none affecting lettering or illustration). Simpson (1897-1940) was the granddaughter of a French marquis who settled in country NSW in the mid-19th century. The author was born in Sydney, educated in Australia, but left for England at the age of 16, though she returned to her native country many times. During WWI she worked in decoding for the British Admiralty, and later studied music at Oxford. In England she acquired a reputation as a novelist, a writer of historical biography, a radio broadcaster (she gave a series of talks in Australia for the ABC the year the above novel was published), and later a politician. Simpson's two best novels, "Boomerang" (an ambitious historical account of four generations of a family of French origin) and "Under Capricorn" have a strong Australian content, "highly coloured plots, lightly sketched but credible characters, and a lively, humorous, and sophisticated narrative style " (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature). "Under Capricorn" was produced as a film by a British Studio in 1949, directed by Alfred Hitchcock (not one of his best) and starring Michael Wilding, Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotton. It is a tale of passion and misunderstanding set in colonial NSW and deals with the fortunes of an ex-convict and Irish groom, married to an aristocratic Irish lady. Another historical novel by Simpson, "Saraband for Dead Lovers" was filmed more successfully just a year previously. "Under Capricorn", not uncommon in first edition form, is decidedly so in the handsome Lowen illustrated jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 32423

Book Description: Jonathan Cape, 2010. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First Edition & First Printing. Not price clipped, no inscriptions. DJ Protected. Signed by the author to the title page. Description: Poignant, perceptive and dazzling, in this, her long awaited new collection, Helen Simpson offers acute portraits of lives in transition: of changes for the better, lives stalled and in freefall; of love, loss, and sudden revelations. Warm and funny, the stories are also threaded with a sense of anxiety and fear: of growing old, of commitment, and, most worryingly, of the growing threat to the environment. In the title story, Alan, on a transatlantic flight, is delighted by an unusual upgrade to a first class seat, but is to find his journey disturbed by portents of doom; a family discussion over the fate of a trapped squirrel unexpectedly veers to nearly reveal a shocking truth; and a boy contemplates a parallel life after asking his mother for help with his creative writing homework. Elsewhere Patrick, newly deaf and belligerent, is forced to re-examine his life with the help of a supernatural hearing aid; a profound, heartfelt and distracted prayer is offered for a friend’s health and safety; and in ‘The Festival of the Immortals’, two old friends look back on their lives with joy and regret, as they wait to heckle Charlotte Brontë. Moving deftly between the domestic and the fantastical, from tragedy to comedy, this is a remarkable collection from a master of the genre; each story brilliantly realised, beautifully captured and utterly engrossing.
