Item Description: Heinemann, London, 1937. Hardcover. First edition. A couple of spots of foxing to the foredge, still easily fine in an attractive, fine dustwrapper with a couple of very small tears and tiny nicks. A lovely copy of the true first edition of a novel set in Sydney, Australia in the 1830s, where a young Irishman takes up with a strange household. Basis for the atypical 1949 Alfred Hitchcock film featuring Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Michael Wilding. Simpson co-wrote the novel *Enter Sir John*, also filmed by Hitchcock, and she wrote the dialogue for his films *Sabotage* and *Murder*. Very scarce, and exceptionally so in this condition. Item Description: London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1925. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-245 [246-248: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks] + 8-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, original dark green cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, Heinemann windmill device stamped in blind on rear panel. She became a friend and collaborator of another successful Georgian author with an interest in the fantastic, Clemence Dane. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day or Reginald (1979; 1992). Not in Hubin (1994). Neat owner's signature dated 1931 on front free endpaper. Some light foxing to page edges, but a bright, fine copy in a very good 3/6 reprint jacket advertising Heinemann's "new titles for 1928" on the front flap. A very scarce book. (#152326). Item Description: London, William Heinemann 1937., 1937. First edition. Hardcover. Some light foxing on the edges, bookseller's label on the front fixed endpaper, o/w very good in good price-clipped dustjacket with some professional restoration to short tears and small pieces at the spine tips, flap fold-ins and bottom edge of the back panel (none affecting lettering or illustration). Simpson (1897-1940) was the granddaughter of a French marquis who settled in country NSW in the mid-19th century. The author was born in Sydney, educated in Australia, but left for England at the age of 16, though she returned to her native country many times. During WWI she worked in decoding for the British Admiralty, and later studied music at Oxford. In England she acquired a reputation as a novelist, a writer of historical biography, a radio broadcaster (she gave a series of talks in Australia for the ABC the year the above novel was published), and later a politician. Simpson's two best novels, "Boomerang" (an ambitious historical account of four generations of a family of French origin) and "Under Capricorn" have a strong Australian content, "highly coloured plots, lightly sketched but credible characters, and a lively, humorous, and sophisticated narrative style " (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature). "Under Capricorn" was produced as a film by a British Studio in 1949, directed by Alfred Hitchcock (not one of his best) and starring Michael Wilding, Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotton. It is a tale of passion and misunderstanding set in colonial NSW and deals with the fortunes of an ex-convict and Irish groom, married to an aristocratic Irish lady. Another historical novel by Simpson, "Saraband for Dead Lovers" was filmed more successfully just a year previously. "Under Capricorn", not uncommon in first edition form, is decidedly so in the handsome Lowen illustrated jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 32423

Item Description: William Morrow and Co. New York (1933), 1933. First Edition. R. W. dustjacket art. Uncommon mystery novel with chapters written by different members of the Detection Club including John Rhode, Anthony Berkeley and others. " Murder mystery so strange and baffling that the Home Secretary appeals for help to four of the great amateur detectives of our day - Lord Peter Wimsey, Sir John Saumarez, Mrs. Bradley, and Roger Sheringham". This copy belonging to a rather zealous armchair detective, having filled the pages with fairly light pencil underlining and some notations. An equally zealous future owner with a good eraser could restore this copy to its nearly original state. An uncommon book. Near Fine but for penciling, in nearly Very Good dustjacket, shallow loss at spine ends, few small edge chips, some splitting at front flap edge and mid spine. Bookseller Inventory # 26278
