Fineclean copy and quite scarce thus. The first Dennisthe Menace book appeared in 1952, a year after thefamous cartoon strip began. A popular televisionshow based on the cartoon strip ran from 1959 to1963. Things did not go so well for the realDennis. After the death of his mother from a drugoverdose in 1959 the author's son (named Dennis,of course) became estranged from his father.Things were also rough for the boy who playedDennis on TV, Jay North, who revealed his troubledlife as a child star and has worked helping abusedchildren as a correctional officer. The fictionalDennis endures to this day. Ketcham drew the striphimself until 1994, and at the time of his deathin 2001 it was still running in more than 1,000newspapers worldwide.
