Book Description: Antverpiae (Antwerpen), excudebat Ioannes Galleus, 1647, suite of 154 engravings, modern impressions on thick japan paper. The first edition of these illustrations, a real masterpiece of Flemish bookillustration in the 16th century, appeared anonymously in Antwerp in 1593. An explanatory text with the plates was edited in 1594 (1595) by M.Nutius in Antwerp. Antoon Wiericx engraved 58 plates, 57 were done by Hieronymus Wiericx, 17 by Jan Wiericx , 11 by Adriaen Collaert, 9 by Karel de Mallery, 1 by Jan Collaert and 1 by the unkown engraver I.N. The drawings were made by the Roman draughtsman B.Passaro and are preserved in the Brussels Royal Library. In 1599 the plates were used for an edition of ''Meditationes Sopra Evangelii'' by A. Vivaldi. In 1607, after Jan Moretus had bought the plates from Scribanus, another edition was issued, as in 1647 (hence our frontispiece). A last record of the use of the plates is mentioned by A.Delen (Histoire de la Gravure.); ''Verdussen used 73 plates to illustrate a book by Maria Jesus de Agreda which was called Mystica Ciudad de Dios (editions in 1708, 1722, 1736, 1755)''. Finally the plates became the property of the Cistercian abbey at Westmalle (near Antwerp). Added is a typescript copy of a letter by M.Sabbe, former curator of the Museum Plantin-Moretus, dated June 17 1935, adressed to the Westmalle Abbey, in which he explains to the friars the history of their valued collection of the original plates. Added to this letter is a lenghty study on their history with transcriptions of articles by Rooses (Oud Holland), Delen, letters from 16th century jesuits, Goltzius etc.Presumably our impression of the plates was made around this date. One could deduce from the complicated history as sketched above that the plates must by now be fairly used and worn but this is not the case; the impressions are good and strong and still convey the superb mastery of the Wiericx brothers.§.
