14x22 cm. Original printed wrappers, heavily worn with creases. Short tears at edges, with an unfortunate but not too conspicuous scotch tape repair on the spine. Wrappers detached. Signs of light wear within but generally clean. 299 pp., with eight bright chromolithographic plates featuring fine china. This dates between 1900 and 1906, based on the order sheets which leave space for the final digit and 1906 when the company was incorporated, a fact not reflected in this catalogue. The first 85 pages of the catalog feature rich cut glass, suggesting that this was the line of products that the company wanted to feature. Higgins & Seiter was a leading retailer of fine china, glassware and other decorative home accessories in New York City, located for many years on West 22nd Street (and later 37th Street off Fifth Avenue). The business' origins could be traced back to the 1860s, and it became a partnership in 1887. Its fortunes suffered after it moved uptown with its old space remaining vacant and flagging sales with the advent of World War One in Europe appears to have dealt the store its final blow. It filed for bankruptcy in 1915. This catalogue would appear considerably more extensive than prior iterations by this company, and its interest lies in its depth of products depicted and described in glassware and china, with very interesting shorter sections on other areas, including tobacciana. In terms of china, Limoges is especially well covered, with a considerable amount of the color representations featuring Limoges. Surely this suggests that the company was a major, if not the major, vendor of Limoges in New York, and perhaps Limoges contributed more directly to its coverage. Other companies are well represented, however, including L. Bernardaud, Wedgewood, Minton, Copeland, etc. Among the less well-known product lines today are English Bilton Ware, Cauldon China, etc. There are also sections devoted to Austrian China, Dresden China, Utopian Ware, French Vases, Dutch Pottery Vases, cameo ware, beer sets, cordial sets, gifts (packaged sets of this or that), etc. Other product lines include hall clocks, den novelties, pipe racks and other tobacciana, German steins, and various gift packages, often sets of china and glassware, jardieres, plateau mirrors, teakwood pedestals, A nice aspect of the catalogue is that it features some photographs and drawings of the store display, and so this gives us an idea of a shop display that is really quite different from current norms.
