The translation from French to English was completed by Keene Wallis, Robert Baldick wrote the Introduction for this publication of 317 pages. Several pages are noted to have light brown spots, and two pages have red pen marks-one in the margin to identify a passage and on the second to last page marginalia identifying an Ionesco's "Rinosérus." The cloth is bright, but there is edge wear, wear at the tips and the spine ends are soft. The book is slightly off square. The black lettering on the spine is also clean and bright and the edges toned. Book is considered to be in Good+ condition. The dust jacket has paper loss at the folds, the spine cover is sunned, and the back cover appears toned and discolored. The original price of the book remains present and there is an advertisement for "The Geography of Witchcraft" by Montague Summers on the back cover. The dust jacket is currently protected by a clear removable cover. Images of the book will be posted at a later date.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. xxviii [28] + 317 pages. Octavo (8 by 5 inch) hardcover, full red cloth with d/j, titling in black & gilt to spine * Spine slightly cocked (SEE PIC), one small spot top edge (SEE PIC), sunfading to spine of d/j, corners a touch bumped, light wear to extremities of d/j, o/w VERY GOOD CONDITION IN GOOD D/J. *** An English version of Huysmans' notorious book "La Bas", a fictional account of Satanism in late-19th-century France, just prior to the occult revival which saw the beginnings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the Ordo Templi Orientis, along with well-known occult figures such as S. Liddell MacGregor Mathers, Arthur A. Waite and Aleister Crowley. *** The plot of the book concerns the novelist Durtal, who is disgusted by the emptiness and vulgarity of the modern world. He seeks relief by turning to the study of the Middle Ages, and begins to research the life of the notorious 15th-century child-murderer Gilles de Rais. Through his contacts in Paris (notably Dr. Johannes, modeled after Joseph-Antoine Boullan), Durtal finds out that Satanism is not merely a thing of the past but is alive and flourishing in late-19th-century France. He accordingly embarks on an investigation of the occult underworld with the help of his lover Madame Chantelouve. The novel culminates with what is supposedly an accurate description of a real Black Mass. *^*^* A CLEARLY-TRANSLATED HARDCOVER ENGLISH EDITION OF THIS FAMOUS OCCULT TEXT.
