Item Description: London: printed by J. Nichols: and sold by J. Dodsley; J. Robson; J. Walter; R. Baldwin; and J. Sewell. MDCCLXXXII, 1782. Two vols. in one, 8vo., with a fine engraved portrait of Sancho by F. Bartolozzi after a painting by Gainsborough in vol.I, and an engraved allegorical frontispiece in vol.II, also by Francesco Bartolozzi, (4) + ii + v - lvii + (1) + 22 + (2) + 23 - 204 and (4) + 224pp., complete with both half-titles and with the additional leaf *C4 in vol.I, contemporary calf, neatly and appropriately rebacked, spine gilt and labelled. A very good copy originally owned by one of the subscribers, with her signature 'M. Bouchery'> on front free endpaper. First edition. Blockson 11. Sabin 76310. Ragatz (p.548) and Work (p.475) both note the later 1784 edition. Goldsmiths (12525) has the 2nd ed. of 1783. A landmark in Anglo-African literature which Blockson considered to be 'indispensable to the study of black literature' [A commented bibliography of 101 influential books by and about people of African descent,> p.16]. Sancho was, almost immediately after his death in 1780, adopted by the English abolitionists, his Letters> being cited by the abolitionist movement as an 'outstanding refutation of the idea that black people lacked souls, intellects or rational faculties'. [R. King et al. Ignatius Sancho, An African man of letters.> 1997, p.67.] The Sancho story is probably well known. He was 'born aboard a slave ship en route to the West Indies from Guinea. He was brought to England at the age of two by his master and was presented to three spinster sisters living in Greenwich. He acted as their servant for years and later became a grocer in Charles Street, Westminster, dying in 1780. Published through the kindness of benevolent patrons to demonstrate what a black could accomplish when given an opportunity.' [Ragatz p.548]. While in London, he 'attracted the attention of the Duke of Montagu who had among his diversions his interests in testing whether, by proper cultivation and a proper tuition at school and the university, an African might not be found as capable of literature as a white person. Sancho, who for twenty years of his life served as the Duke's butler, was Montagu's first protégé'. [Blockson p.16]. The Memoirs> or Life> included, in vol.I. (pp.v - xvi) of 'the extraordinary negro' were written by Joseph Jekyll (1754-1837), the lawyer and politician, who stepped in for Dr. Johnson after Johnson had failed to deliver his promised memoir of the life of Sancho which had been commissioned. Jekyll wrote his own brief account, which is the best single source of information about Sancho's life, 'in imitation of Dr. Johnson's style' [Stephen M. Lee in ODNB]. Bookseller Inventory # 24962

Item Description: London: printed by J. Nichols; and sold by C. Dilly, 1784, 1784. 12mo, xiv, 393 pp., engraved portrait (spotted), a few library blindstamps, contemporary marbled boards, neat new calf spine. Third edition (two years after the first). Born on a slave ship and orphaned when only two years old, Sancho was brought to London by his owner and raised by three maiden sisters in Greenwich. He was befriended and educated by the second Duke of Montagu and eventually taken into his household as a butler. He established a grocery shop in Westminster, and as an independent householder was the only eighteenth-century Afro-Briton to vote in elections. He gained widespread celebrity when one of his letters appeared in the posthumously published Letters of Laurence Sterne; Sancho had initiated a correspondence with Sterne, encouraging him to continue writing to alleviate the oppression of Sancho's fellow Africans. Sancho's Letters, published by subscription, has become a classic of black literature. "The subscription list for the first edition of the Letters reflects the great range of Sancho's social circle: men and women, aristocrats, servants, artists, businessmen, country squires, and prominent politicians. The ease and respect with which he communicates with his correspondents, no matter how much they differ from him in age or social status, account for much of the appeal of the tone of his letters. Even though his own status rose, he never lost contact with those who had been his fellow servants, some of whom were also fellow Afro-Britons."ÑOxford DNB. Bookseller Inventory # 14497

Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Born a slave, Ignatius Sancho (c.1729-80) became one of the most influential free Africans of his century. He corresponded with many notable figures, including the author Laurence Sterne, whom he urged to write against slavery in the West Indies. The politician Joseph Jekyll (1754-1837) commended Sancho s epistolary talent in a brief biography, praising his wild patriotism and universal philanthropy . This two-volume collection of Sancho s letters was published in 1782 by the hostess Frances Crewe (1748-1818), who upheld Sancho as proof, in an age of dehumanising slavery, that Africans possessed as much natural intelligence as Europeans.
