Book Description: [Binghamton]: Whispers Press, 1982. Octavo, leather-backed linen. Limited edition. One of 1000 numbered copies signed by Asimov and publisher Stuart Schiff. "A belated sequel to the 'Foundation Trilogy,' marking Asimov's return to his distinctive brand of cerebral space opera after more than twenty years. In this yarn (and the related novels THE ROBOTS OF DAWN, ROBOTS AND EMPIRE, FOUNDATION AND EARTH and PRELUDE TO FOUNDATION) Asimov explains the galactic history of THE STARS LIKE DUST and the "Foundation" series as a plot by the robots (from the otherwise unconnected 'Robot' stories) to ensure the survival and happiness of the human race, and hints that the history-altering time travelers of THE END OF ETERNITY set up the whole thing." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 143. Winner of the 1983 Hugo award. 1982 Nebula nominee. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II- 47. Sargent, British and American Literature, 1516-1985, p. 410. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. (#114513). Book Description: Doubleday, Garden City, NY, 1988. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. A prequel to the Foundation trilogy, set during Hari Seldon's lifetime and describes the invention of psychohistory. First edition (no statement of printing on copyright page, contrary to Doubleday's usual practice). A near fine copy (small area of glue residue on front cover) in a fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author shortly after leaving the hospital in early 1990. Asimov's handwriting is shaky and uncharacteristically unsure--he has crossed out part of the inscription and initially dated it 1980, correcting the year by writing over the 8 with a firm hand. Laid into the book is a handwritten fan letter to Asimov asking if the character Dors Venabili was a robot. Asimov wrote at the bottom of the letter, 'You'll have to read the next book for that--if I live to write it.' He did (Forward the Foundation) and she was. This book comes from a large collection of Isaac Asimov first editions, including many signed and especially fine copies. Signed By Author. Bookseller Inventory # 10466

Book Description: Gnome Press, 1951. First Edition. ** THE FOUNDATION TRILOGY ** FOUNDATION, FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE & SECOND FOUNDATION, Gnome Press, 1951, 1952 & 1953 respectively, each volume in first edition (and first state bindings in first state full color pictorial dust-wrappers). This work awarded the HUGO for the best all time series. FOUNDATION is near fine in vg+/near fine dust-wrapper with some light wear and tear; FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE is vg+/near fine in bright vg+ dust-wrapper with some light wear and tear and some rubbing to the dust-wrapper panels; SECOND FOUNDATION is vg+/near fine in like dust-wrapper with some light rubbing to the rear dust-wrapper panel. Typed postcard SIGNED by the author laid in. (Editorial note: We would love to say that our dust-wrapper for FOUNDATION is the rare issue with the main character throughout the series name misspelled on the front dust-wrapper flap, but ironically, this major typo (Hari Sheldon for Hari Seldon) exists on all first printing dust-wrappers and was not caught until the second printing of this volume. To make matters even a bit more bizarre, the misspelled name also exists on the rear flap of FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE). Bookseller Inventory # 14561

Book Description: Gnome Press Publishers 1951-1953., New York, 1951. First edition, first issues of each book in Asimov's acclaimed Foundation Trilogy. Volumes 1 and 2 are signed by Asimov, volume 3 is inscribed by the author. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Foundation (Currey priority A binding), publisher's dark blue cloth with red titles to the spine. Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with three titles advertised on the rear panel and two on the rear flap. First edition, first state (Currey binding A). Octavo. 247 pages. Foundation and Empire is the first issue red cloth with the publisher's imprint on the spine measuring 2.2 cm. It is near fine in a near fine bright dust jacket. Second Foundation is lightly rubbed, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptionally nice set, most rare signed and inscribed. Foundation was originally a series of eight short stories published in Astounding Magazine between May 1942 and January 1950. According to Asimov, the premise was based on ideas set forth in Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and was invented spontaneously on his way to meet with editor John W. Campbell, with whom he developed the concept. "The first four stories were collected, along with a new story taking place before the others, in a single volume published by Gnome Press in 1951 as Foundation. The remainder of the stories were published in pairs by Gnome as Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953), resulting in the "Foundation Trilogy", as the series was known for decades" (Halmad, Spectra). The Foundation Trilogy was given a Hugo Award for the "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. Bookseller Inventory # 2496
