Book Description: Bloomsbury, London, 1997. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. Uncorrected Proof Copy in Proof D/W. The Proof is white with a Yellow stripe and is 224 pages long. It lists ‘Joanne Rowling’ on the copyright page and ‘J A Rowling’ on the title page. It is believed that only proof 200 copies of the Philosopher’s Stone were produced. This copy has been quite heavily read and is in about VG condition. The spine is slightly slanted and there are reading creases down its full length. There are creases to several corners of the book and the rear cover is a trifle soiled. The proof D/W is a large piece of card representing the front and back panels and spine. It is in near fine (or better condition) and has been folded around the proof book for the last 10 years or so. It is interesting to note that the proof D/W has a different back cover and spine colour than was eventually used. It is thought that only 6 proof D/W’s were produced and this is, we believe, the only copy to have come onto the market in the last few years. The proof D/W was issued to show what the boards of the future hardback first edition (and wrappers of the paperback first edition) might look like. The proof origins are plain to see as it lists on the edge of the back cover the following information: June 1997/ £4.50/ 224 pp/ 198x129 mm/ 07475 32745. The ISBN number was eventually used on the first paperback edition which, of course, had the same cover as the first hardback edition. The ultimate addition to any J K Rowling Harry Potter collection and exceedinly scarce. If ever there was a sure-fire long-term investment for the Pension Fund, this is it!. Discovered "among the many papers which Dumbledore left in his will to the Hogwarts Archives," the venerable wizard's ruminations on the Tales allow today's readers to place them in the context of 16th century Muggle society, even allowing that "Beedle was somewhat out of step with his times in preaching a message of brotherly love for Muggles" during the era of witch hunts that would eventually drive the wizarding community into self-imposed exile. In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters. Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead." Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead." Both a wise and delightful addition to the Harry Potter canon, this new translation of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is all that fans could hope for and more--and an essential volume for the libraries of Muggles, wizards, and witches, both young and old.
