The corners and spine ends show some wear. The binding is square and tight though the front hinge is beginning to crack. The interior pages are clean and unmarked. Hardcover. Condition: Good +. First Edition. Octavo. xlviii, 512 pages. Blue cloth hardcover with title on the spine. A few light scratches on the back cover. Pages 78 and 79 browned from placement of an old news clippings which are now inside plastic and laid inside the front cover. Two old typed poems on unlined paper are also laid in the front of the book. Both sheets are creased and folded. One of the poems is titled "Loyal (To General Cleburne)" and "The Sword in the Sea". Both poems signed 'Frank O' Ticknor' in another hand at the bottom (Ticknor died in 1874). Stephens Mitchell bookplate located on the front end sheet. Signed by the 3 editors on the right front flyleaf. Provenance from the estate of the Mitchell family in Atlanta, Georgia. Stephens Mitchell (1896-1983) was the son of Eugene Muse Mitchell and Isabel "Maybelle" (Stephens) Mitchell. He was born 1896 in Atlanta. His sister was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia and was a prominent Atlanta attorney, historian, and devout Catholic. He also edited the Atlanta Historical Bulletin. After John Marsh, husband of Margaret, died in 1952 Stephens became the executor of Margaret Mitchell's estate. Stephens Mitchell died in 1983 and the estate was passed on to his two sons Eugene Muse Mitchell II and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell.
