Book Description: Cullman, AL: The Sacred Harp Publishing Company, Inc. - Denson Music Publishing Co. (printer), 1960., 1960. Paged as [1-5], 12-578, [579-582] pages. Oblong hardcover: H 17.5cm x L 25.75cm. No dust jacket. Black cloth rubbed, surface chipping to cloth at frayed spine ends, cloth frayed/worn away from top and bottom board edges and corners (although mostly intact along fore-edges) leaving cardstock exposed, reinforced stitching along joints appears to be original, front board's muted olive lettering remains easily legible. Edges toned; foxing to endpapers; past owner's pencil inscription upon front free endpaper; light foxing to several initial and terminal leaves but with interior pages overall remaining quite clean. Pages 45-46 with a worn bottom edge which fractionally extends past text block's bottom edge; similar mild wear along fore-edge of pages 105-106 due to similar circumstance of fractionally extending past text block. Vertical creasing near fore-edges of pages 103-106 too. Binding is firm. No indication of any missing leaves and odd jump in pagination from first unnumbered five pages to officially paginated page 12 corresponds to other Denson Revision editions previously sold by this bookseller. A good copy. Features Preface on [page 2], "Rudiments of Music" essay and glossary by Paine Denson on pages 12-23 and 24-25 respectively, innumerable songs with both lyrics and musical scores on pages 26-578, "Index Note (Original Sacred Harp)" on pages [579-581], and concluding "Supplement Index" on page [582]. Fa-so-la or shape-note singing, a method of vocal instruction for choruses unaccompanied by instrumentation, arose from the Protestant Singing School movement of early 1800s New England but only became popular in the rural churches of Southern Appalachia where the tradition continues today in northern counties of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Among the earliest 19th century shape-note tune books and arguably the most influential, THE SACRED HARP, compiled by Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879) and Elisha J. King (ca. 1821-1844) was first published in 1844. James Landrum White (1847-1925), son of Benjamin White, authored several revisions to THE SACRED HARP, the most successful of which was issued in 1911, as he sought to placate traditional Sacred Harp singing groups who took umbrage to earlier alterations in key and harmony as well as song selection. James White's efforts led to a further split in the shape note singing community as Joseph Summerlin James (1849-1931), chairman of the United Sacred Harp Musical Association, and Seaborn McDaniel Denson (1854-1936) published their ORIGINAL SACRED HARP (aka the James Revision) in August 1911 in Atlanta, Georgia as they added alto parts and restored songs deleted by the 1869-1870 Southern Musical Convention. The J.S. James/S.M. Denson 1911 collaboration was further amended by members of the latter author's family in what is called the first Denson revision published in 1936 and initiated by Thomas Jackson Denson (1863-1935) and completed by his son Paine Denson. Thus this 1960 edition (with its title page specifying "1960 Supplement") still has roots in the original 1844 volume and, although heavily amended, is still a landmark tune book in American music history and an integral edition among the convoluted saga of traditionalist and reformist elements within the shape note choral heritage. OCLC cites three other successive Denson Revision editions for 1967, 1971, and 1997. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. Bookseller Inventory # 1213-5207
