Item Description: Purple Rose Publishing. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 272 pages. Dimensions: 8.0in. x 5.2in. x 0.8in.A story of honor and bloody revenge. The legend of the 47 ronin is one of the most popular and best known stories about the samurai in Japan. It is often referred to as the countrys national legend and is the most revered example of the samurai code of honor, bushido, put to the ultimate test. The story tells of a group of samurai who, in 1701, were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was compelled to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka. The ronin, led by Asanos chief councilor, Oishi Yoshio, avenged their masters honor by killing Kira, after waiting and planning for almost two years. In turn, the ronin were themselves forced to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder. With much embellishment, this true story was popularized in Japanese culture as emblematic of the loyalty, sacrifice, persistence, and honor that people should preserve in their daily lives. The popularity of the almost mythical tale was enhanced by rapid modernization following the fall of the shogun during the Meiji era of Japanese history. Many versions of the events appeared and the story of the 47 ronin continues to be popular in Japan to this day. This book traces the history of the story through various retellings. It includes the first English version to appear in print, from Isaac Titsinghs Illustrations of Japan, published in 1822, plus the second from The Capital of the Tycoon by Rutherford Alcock. It also includes in full The Forty-Seven Ronins from Tales of Old Japan by A. B. Mitford (plus his account of seppukuhara-kiri), The Loyal Ronins by Shunsui Tamenaga, translated by Shiuichiro Saito and Edward Greey and The Forty-Seven Ronin by James Murdoch from A History of Japan. This is a comprehensive collection which brings together some of the best known versions of the story and serves as a perfect introduction to the legendary tale of the 47 ronin. Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from A History of Constitutional Reform in Great Britain and Ireland: With a Full Account of the Three Great Measures of 1832, 1867, and 1884 Now that the Reform Act of 1884 - one of the charters of British freedom, has been secured, it may not be unfitting to inquire what it means, what it is worth, who have fought for it, and how it has been won. It is not much more than half a century since this great empire was really governed by a few thousands - by a mere oligarchy - and now we find that the political power of the country has been transferred to five millions of our fellow-countrymen, being perhaps three-fourths of the manhood of the nation. It is the object of these pages to present a short review of the successive reforms by which this emancipation was effected. The history of human government exhibits an organic growth or development - it has a beginning, middle, and end. It begins with despotism, runs a course of constitutionalism, and ends with self-government. It is the constitutional phase of the political government of the country that has been selected for treatment here; that portion of its history during which we see the process going on whereby despotism was put under harness, and political power secured by the people at large.
