Snider Collection of Historical Americana, his sale Christie's 21st June, 2005, lot 241 First edition and a SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE EDITOR, J. WATSON WEBB IN EACH VOLUME: "To W.S. Stell from his friend Watson Webb." Based on travels of Captain William Drummond Stewart, a Scottish nobleman who would inherit the title of seventh baronet of Murthly Castle in 1838, who took sporting trips to the U.S. in 1832, 1838 and 1842, ACCOMPANIED BY THE CELEBRATED ARTIST ALFRED JACOB MILLER (1810-1874). Miller was the first Anglo-American painter to travel as far west as the Rocky Mountains, and the only one to paint a comprehensive view of the Rocky Mountain fur trade. Stewart came to America on pay from the British Army in 1832 and traveled west to the Rockies where he remained for several years. While in New Orleans during the winter of 1836-1837 he met Alfred Jacob Miller, and invited him to accompany him on his next journey to record scenes of his adventures. "Miller departed from St. Louis with Stewart's party in May 1837. Their destination was the fur trade rendezvous, a meeting held each year between eastern traders, Indians, and Rocky Mountain trappers. The 1837 rendezvous took place at Horse Creek, a tributary of the Green River, near the present-day border of Colorado and Wyoming. The party went from St. Louis to Westport and then traveled northwest along the Kansas River to the Platte, passing such landmarks as Scott's Bluff and Chimney Rock on their way to Fort Laramie. From Fort Laramie they continued west through the South Pass and north to the rendezvous. After the rendezvous, Stewart and his band headed into the Wind River Mountains to the source of the Green River. There they spent their time hunting before returning to St. Louis in the fall of 1837. "Miller returned to New Orleans shortly thereafter and began work on eighty-seven wash and watercolor drawings and several oil paintings for Stewart that were based on sketches he made in the field. Miller is best known for his western subjects, which include sketches produced in the field along with finished oil-on-canvas and watercolor paintings made for Stewart. Although Miller's early works are undated, it is likely he completed as many as 150 sketches in the field. Most of these are executed in watercolor or wash over pencil with gouache on a variety of papers and are small in size. In the years following his return from Scotland, Miller continued to produce versions of these initial sketches in oil and watercolor. More than half of Miller's paintings show Shoshone, Sioux, and Nez Percé engaged in a variety of activities: caring for children, preparing meat, sewing, chasing horses, or hunting. Miller also painted scenes of the caravan en route and of trappers at the rendezvous, along with mountain landscapes. Many of the earlier works show Stewart hunting or visiting Shoshone camps. In later watercolor copies, Miller replaced Stewart's figur. Bookseller Inventory # 1-6-2

Item Description: Paris, Imprimerie de Didot l'aîné, 1789-1790, 1790. Couverture rigide. Bon exemplaire. Bookseller Inventory # 169278

Item Description: London: printed for the author no. 12 Old Broad-Street; and sold by all the booksellers in town and country, 1782. 8vo, pp. [vi], 435; with an engraved frontispiece (in sanguine) and ten plates; bound without the half title but otherwise an excellent copy, uncut in the original blue boards, white paper spine, rubbed but sound. A very fine copy of a lovely book, with ten finely-engraved plates illustrating various hairstyles, all by James Delegal. The text is, oddly enough, based on the Seven Ages of Man speech by Jacques in As You Like It, and indeed the frontispiece illustrates this too. As the title page explains, the author (about whom nothing seems to be known, other than that he must have been a hairdresser himself) saw fit to include a number of other topics in his text: 'complete rules for the management of children and education of youth; and excellent rules for the preservation of the health and happiness of age . the whole interspersed with moral thoughts, being necessary for all families'. A fascinating and beautifully-illustrated book. Bookseller Inventory # 16705

(Kress, S.5268. Manque à Goldsmiths et Einaudi). Bel exemplaire, bien relié, très frais. Bookseller Inventory # 20244

Item Description: by John Reid, [Edinburgh] : London, printed and re-printed in Edinburgh, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd) THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the midst of a propaganda and power struggle between James II and William, and ultimately between England and Holland. In very concrete and practical terms, the exiles' position on the issue of toleration was tied to their willingness to accept a pardon from James and return to Britain, as an endorsement of Stewart's claim that all was well there, or to remain in Holland and continue their fight against James, counting on the support and encouragement of William" (SOURCE: Richard Ashcraft, "Revolutionary Politics and Locke's Two Treatises of Government" p. 486). Ours is apparently the only copy currently on the market; no copies has appeared at auction in at least 30 years. Aldis 2821. Wing S5534. Bookseller Inventory # 664

Item Description: Abbott's Magic Manufacturing Company, Colon, MI, 1961. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 22 years of the magazine bound in 11 (eleven) clothbound volumes. (Blue-gray buckram) From 1961 to June 1982. (The first six issues of Volume 22 are included. All other volumes are complete including the trick annuals that were included in early volumes.) Eight of the eleven bound books were from the Egyptian Hall Museum (Nashville, TN) collection and have the museum curator's name on spines (David Price.) All volumes have some foxing (tan spots) to page edges and there is a slightly musty odor to the volumes which may diminish if stored in a dry environment. All issues are complete with no missing pages or cuts. Excellent library style heavy duty bindings. New Tops was a wonderful magazine which was a house organ for the Abbott Magic Company and interest in the magazine was largely driven by the strength of its regular columnists and their varied specialized topics which catered to both amateur and professional alike. Ed Marlo regularly contributed card material, Clarke Crandall had a humorous column for many years, Sid Lorraine was the reviewer and there were columns at various times which address young magicians, illusionists, carnival and fair performers, kid show performers, ventriloquists, and other specialty interests.
