Item Description: Paris, Imprimerie de Didot l'aîné, 1789-1790, 1790. Couverture rigide. Bon exemplaire. Bookseller Inventory # 169278

Item Description: Printed for the author, London, 1782. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. An Untrimmed(!) Copy of an 18th Century Book Telling Everything There Is To Know about Hair. 254 x 152 mm (10 x 6"). 3 p.l. (lacking half title), 485, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. A recent replica binding of blue paper boards backed with light gray paper spine and paper label, edges untrimmed. Engraved frontispiece illustrating Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" printed in sanguine, and 10 PLATES OF ELABORATE AND FREQUENTLY FANTASTICAL HAIRSTYLES, engraved on copper by Delegal. Colas 2802; Hiler, p. 816; Lipperheide 1681. Two short marginal tears to frontispiece, the text printed on paper a shade less than bright, occasional minor foxing or smudges to the (very generous) margins, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent copy of a book normally found in an undesirable state, the leaves and plates clean and fresh, and the replica binding as new. Published for ladies' maids and valets as well as that less fortunate woman who relied on her own hands for hairstyling, this work supplies "ample rules . . . [and] directions" for arranging and preserving hair, along "with a history of the hair and head dress, from the earliest ages to the present time, particularly as they have appeared upon the English stage" during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Our author/hairdresser James Stewart offers a comprehensive analysis of hair's growth, nature, and color as well as the various products, cosmetics, and wigs that might be used in hair care, styling, and replacement. No doubt to widen the potential customer base for the book, its protracted subtitle goes on to inform us that "the plan of this work requiring it, there are also complete rules for the management of children and education of youth; and excellent rules for the preservation of the health and happiness of age; being a guide through the seven ages of man: the whole interspersed with moral thoughts, being necessary for all families." Stewart has illustrated this work with some of his elegant and fanciful creations for both men and women, the latter evidencing his (intuitive) belief in the old Southern maxim, "The higher the hair, the closer to God." He employs actresses for his examples, and throws in occasionally unkind commentary on the personal grooming of past and present stars of the stage. It would be nice to see this work on bright paper, but all of the other copies we have seen of it have been affected by overall browning and significant foxing. This is not a common book: ABPC lists sales of just three copies in the last 29 years). Bookseller Inventory # ST12096

Item Description: London: printed for the author no. 12 Old Broad-Street; and sold by all the booksellers in town and country, 1782. 8vo, pp. [vi], 435; with an engraved frontispiece (in sanguine) and ten plates; bound without the half title but otherwise an excellent copy, uncut in the original blue boards, white paper spine, rubbed but sound. A very fine copy of a lovely book, with ten finely-engraved plates illustrating various hairstyles, all by James Delegal. The text is, oddly enough, based on the Seven Ages of Man speech by Jacques in As You Like It, and indeed the frontispiece illustrates this too. As the title page explains, the author (about whom nothing seems to be known, other than that he must have been a hairdresser himself) saw fit to include a number of other topics in his text: 'complete rules for the management of children and education of youth; and excellent rules for the preservation of the health and happiness of age . the whole interspersed with moral thoughts, being necessary for all families'. A fascinating and beautifully-illustrated book. Bookseller Inventory # 16705

Item Description: by John Reid, [Edinburgh] : London, printed and re-printed in Edinburgh, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd) THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the midst of a propaganda and power struggle between James II and William, and ultimately between England and Holland. In very concrete and practical terms, the exiles' position on the issue of toleration was tied to their willingness to accept a pardon from James and return to Britain, as an endorsement of Stewart's claim that all was well there, or to remain in Holland and continue their fight against James, counting on the support and encouragement of William" (SOURCE: Richard Ashcraft, "Revolutionary Politics and Locke's Two Treatises of Government" p. 486). Ours is apparently the only copy currently on the market; no copies has appeared at auction in at least 30 years. Aldis 2821. Wing S5534. Bookseller Inventory # 664

This essay on religious freedom by the great Scottish lawyer, reforming Lord Advocate of Scotland and political opponent of the Stuarts had its basis in a pamphlet war. In 1667 Stewart contributed legal remarks to Naphtali: Or, The Wrestling of the Church of Scotland for the Kingdom of Christ, a pamphlet by James Stirling, a Covenanter minister, that defended the actions of Presbyterians against the imposition of episcopalianism by the British government, including the bloody Pentland Rising of 1666. It was attacked that year by Andrew Honeyman [1619-1676], Bishop of Orkney, in a Survey of the Insolent and Infamous Libel Entitled "Naphtali." Stewart replied with Jus Populi Vindicatum, a restatement of Naphthali's argument with more legal and political reinforcement. The Bishop did not publish a response. Item Description: Wiley & Putnam, New York, 1841. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. viii, 547 pp. Original blindstamped cloth, discretely rebacked, title in gilt on spine; interior excellent. From the library of the Medical Society of the County of Kings with their bookplate naming each of the twelve members in decorative wreaths. Generally an excellent copy. First edition of this pioneering work on the practice of pediatrics. American literature of the time neglected pediatrics as a distinct field of medicine, so based on his own experience as a physician, as well as extensive research, the author speaks to the specific needs related to childrens’ illnesses. He describes energy levels of children varying from vital to morbid; and, perhaps for the first time, applies the study of "morbid anatomy and pathology," controversial for relying on the visual and microscopic examination of the body, its organs, and fluids. The author attributes the systems of the body to one of the following: 1. vital functions, essential to life; 2. natural functions, which may be suspended for a time without destruction of life; 3. animal functions.Stewart (1799-1864) is best remembered for establishing the Nursery and Children’s Hospital of New York in 1852, the very first hospital in the United States dedicated to children alone. He gained recognition as a writer for translating Billard’s famous Traité des maladies des enfants from the French in 1839, with an appendix of his own commentary. Bookseller Inventory # 14029

Item Description: London: Hamilton, Adams & Glasgow: Thomas D. Morison, 1887. A superb and valuable collection of writings on the game of golf. Stewart's aim was to gather together extracts from some of the great works and publish them as an affordable, single volume "within the reach of anyone". So herein we find The Goff: An Heroi-Comical Poem in Three Cantos, by Thomas Matheson (Edinburgh, 1743); Historical Sketch of the Royal Scottish Game of Golf, from Kay's Edinburgh Portraits by James Paterson (Edinburgh, 1842); and  Alexander M'Kellar's The Cock O'The Green, also from Kay's Edinburgh Portraits. This toothsome banquet of golfiana closes with the marvellous study of Allan Robertson, The Champion Golfer, which first saw light in the Dundee Advertiser in September 1859. First Edition. 8vo. xi + [1] + p10-300 + 8pp book catalogue at the rear. Original red cloth boards, generally tired, head and tail of spine worn, spine splashed with some sort of ink, gilt title and vignette (up-turned crossed clubs and balls) to spine. Slight discolouration to the margins of the upper boards. Contents fresh, gutter exposed at p104/105, scattered and inconsequential foxing. A good copy of a scarce and extremely charming volume. Item Description: Columbia Pictures, Culver City, CA, 1955. Original one sheet for the 1955 film. The seventh of nine spectacular revisionist Westerns Anthony Mann directed between 1950 and 1960, and his fifth with James Stewart. One of the best and leanest films by the acclaimed director-actor pairing, one you will hear come up in a discussion that always includes "Winchester '73" (1950) and "The Naked Spur" (1953). And for good reason--what ties the films together is Stewart's hell-bent, disturbed protagonist. In his excellent study of American film Westerns, Jim Hitt makes mention of Mann's shrewd adaptation : "As with most of the [Western serializations in] the "Saturday Evening Post," "The Man from Laramie" was formula all the way. While the film [adaptation] retains much of the plot, Mann and his scriptwriters concentrated on the obsessiveness of Stewart's character. His mirror image is the almost blind, megalomaniacal Alec Waggonman (Donald Crisp).[an] old man in the process of choosing a successor to his empire." The buildup of tension and resolution in Mann's version is built from Stewart's razor-sharp sense of personal justice, leading to an ending that, as Hitt notes, "is far more in keeping with the [newly-developed] screen character of Lockhart than the novel's ending where villain and hero have the more traditional gunfight." 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 centimeters), linen-backed. Near Fine. Hitt, pp. 229-230. Kitses, pp. 29-80. Bookseller Inventory # 119223
