Item Description: 1884. [the rare two-volume edition] A Story for Children and for Those Who Love Children. Illustrated. [In Two Volumes.] London: W. Swan Sonnenschein & Co., n.d. [1884]. Original dark green [Vol II lighter green] cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, all page edges gilt. First English Edition of this children's classic, made further famous by the 1937 film starring Shirley Temple. The Swiss author Johanna Spyri (née Heusser, 1827-1901) wrote children's tales as a way of recapturing her youth once she had married a lawyer and moved from the countryside to Zurich. (She wrote this one in just four weeks.) This London edition was published in the same year that the author's husband and only child died.~The original edition, in German, was published in 1880-1881; in 1882 or 1883, her German publisher did publish an English translation of the first volume -- now practically impossible to find. The American edition by Cupples Upham of Boston came out in 1885, two-volumes-in-one; since this London edition is quite rare, the Boston edition is the first generally-obtainable one today. (It has recently been discovered that there was an 1830 German book titled "Adelheide: das Mädchen vom Alpengebirge," with which Johanna Spyri had probably been familiar as a child -- and from which she apparently borrowed freely, five decades later.)~The binding for this tale is a beautiful pictorial one, showing on the front cover the five-year-old orphan Heidi being left by her Aunt Dete with her curmudgeonly grandfather, and on the spine Heidi with a goat. Oddly, both bindings read "Heidi's Early Experiences," even though that is not the title of the second volume -- probably a cost-saving measure by this minor London publisher (of German heritage) who specialized in books on sociology and politics.~These volumes are in bright, close-to-fine condition, with scarcely any soil or wear (a few leaves stand slightly proud, but both volumes are tight and secure, the original endpapers not even cracked; in Vol I there are occasional small rust-stains from the staples used to bind the book, as this title unfortunately came out during the brief unsuccessful experiment of using staples rather than string). This is the best copy to surface on the market in decades. Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with twin chemises. Bookseller Inventory # 12974

Item Description: Perthes Gotha 1881, 1880. Two volumes, both first editions. First volume bound in original publisher's mauve cloth lettered in gilt with border design in black to the upper cover. Second volume in original publisher's pictorial paper covered boards. First volume a little worn with short splits to the cloth at the rear joint, hinges repaired. Second volume rebacked with original paper spine laid down. Internally clean with occasional spotting. A sound set of an extremely fragile set of books. Johanna Spyri began writing as a hobby, having her first story published pseudonymously in 1871. Throughout the 1870's she published several stories for adults and children based around her own reminiscences of growing up in Hirzel in rural Switzerland. Success came in 1880 with "Heidi's Lehr- und Wanderjahre", the story of an orphan girl growing up in the Alps. The book was an instant success and Spyri followed it up with a sequel in 1881. Translations soon followed for England and America, and in its first decade it was issued in no less than thirteen different editions, assuring Spyri's financial future following the death of her husband in 1884. Its popularity has continued into the twentieth century and can now be considered one of the cornerstones of children's literature. Due to their fragility, first editions are now rare. Auction records show only one other set (Manney sale, 1991) in the original bindings being sold in the last 30 years, both volumes of which were rebacked. Bookseller Inventory # 25557

Item Description: Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes, 1880–81, 1880. 2 volumes, octavo. Vol. 1 in original green sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, front cover decorated in black, cream endpapers; vol. 2 in later red half cloth, unlettered, marbled sides. Vol. 1 inner hinges reinforced with cloth at an early date, a very few trivial spots; vol. 2 outer leaves very faintly toned in margins; withal a good set. First edition of both parts. Throughout the 1870s Johanna Spyri published stories for adults and children based around her reminiscences of growing up in rural Switzerland. But huge success came with the publication of Heidi, the most important Swiss contribution to children's literature after the "Swiss Family Robinson" of J. R. Wyss. As usual with Christmas books, the first book was published in December 1879 but dated the following year. Doderer III, 447; Hürlimann 310; Seebass II, 1930 ("rare", vol. 2 only); Wegehaupt III, 3633 (vol. 2 only); Weilenmann 3216 & 3233. Bookseller Inventory # 79592

Bookseller Inventory # 2492AB
