Item Description: Perthes Gotha 1881, 1880. Two volumes, both first editions. First volume bound in original publisher's mauve cloth lettered in gilt with border design in black to the upper cover. Second volume in original publisher's pictorial paper covered boards. First volume a little worn with short splits to the cloth at the rear joint, hinges repaired. Second volume rebacked with original paper spine laid down. Internally clean with occasional spotting. A sound set of an extremely fragile set of books. Johanna Spyri began writing as a hobby, having her first story published pseudonymously in 1871. Throughout the 1870's she published several stories for adults and children based around her own reminiscences of growing up in Hirzel in rural Switzerland. Success came in 1880 with "Heidi's Lehr- und Wanderjahre", the story of an orphan girl growing up in the Alps. The book was an instant success and Spyri followed it up with a sequel in 1881. Translations soon followed for England and America, and in its first decade it was issued in no less than thirteen different editions, assuring Spyri's financial future following the death of her husband in 1884. Its popularity has continued into the twentieth century and can now be considered one of the cornerstones of children's literature. Due to their fragility, first editions are now rare. Auction records show only one other set (Manney sale, 1991) in the original bindings being sold in the last 30 years, both volumes of which were rebacked. Bookseller Inventory # 25557

Item Description: Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes, 1880–81, 1880. 2 volumes, octavo. Vol. 1 in original green sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, front cover decorated in black, cream endpapers; vol. 2 in later red half cloth, unlettered, marbled sides. Vol. 1 inner hinges reinforced with cloth at an early date, a very few trivial spots; vol. 2 outer leaves very faintly toned in margins; withal a good set. First edition of both parts. Throughout the 1870s Johanna Spyri published stories for adults and children based around her reminiscences of growing up in rural Switzerland. But huge success came with the publication of Heidi, the most important Swiss contribution to children's literature after the "Swiss Family Robinson" of J. R. Wyss. As usual with Christmas books, the first book was published in December 1879 but dated the following year. Item Description: Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1922., 1922. Jessie Willcox Smith's Last Major Children's Story[SMITH, Jessie Willcox, illustrator]. SPYRI, Johanna. Heidi. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1922. First Jessie Willcox Smith illustrated edition, first issue. Quarto (9 1/4 x 7 inches; 236 x 178 mm.). 380 pp. Color pictorial title-page, ten full-page color plates and twenty-three full-page plates in text printed in red and black.Publishers blue cloth, front cover with pasted-on illustration, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, color pictorial endpapers. With the original color pictorial dust jacket. Dust jacket with 1/4 chips at top of spine, 3/4 inch chip at foot and some additional chipping on edges. A near fine copy of the book in a good dust jacket."Heidi, written by Johanna Spyri, was issued by the proven publishers of David McKay, in Philadelphia. It contained ten full-page color plates, a color pictorial wrapper, a color insert on the cover, pictorial end-papers, and colored line drawings throughout the book. This was again a fine production, typical of David McKay, and was a perfect showcase for Smith's illustrative art. The book represents the last major children's story in which Smith specifically designed illustrations. Fourteen separate books would follow until Smith's death in 1935, but all of these were either composites of illustrations from previous Good Housekeeping covers, or they represented relatively minor contributions of only a few illustrations. Smith's paintings for Heidi are quite unique in their use of coloration, with many shades of purple, green, and orange, giving an ethereal effect. One such illustration shows Heidi introducing various goats to her friend Clara and has a very Maxfield Parrish-like quality, especially seen in the bright orange and violet colored mountains in the background."
