Black and white plate of John Adams Hazelton included in front of book. Printed by Lawton Kennedy. Front cover has a small image of a ship on the ocean. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are clean and intact but have a little fading by spine and top edge. John Adams Hazelton (1820-1912) was an American from Chester, New Hampshire. This book contains six letters written by Hazelton in 1849 when he was aboard the Brig Randolph, which traveled from Boston to California around Cape Horn, and when he arrived in California. Hazelton writes in vivid language to describe the various events during his journey. Letters are reprinted from The Pacific Historian, Volume I, Numbers, 2, 3, and 4. Also included is an introduction by Mary Geneva Bloom and a brief background on the Hazelton House in Chester, New Hampshire, where the Hazelton letters were found.
