Directions for the Gardiner is here published for the first time by Nonesuch (1932), heretofore in manuscript form only, being Evelyn's instructions for his gardens of Sayes Court, Deptford (now south-East London). Includes a catalog of the various species of flowers, trees, and shrubs in the Sayes Court gardens, instructions for their care, a month-to-month gathering/harvesting schedule with directions for preparation of salads for the table, a list of tools necessary for the garden, and a variety and wealth of information on the caretaking of a seventeenth century English manor garden. A presentation that might be considered the epitome of Evelyn's gardening knowledge. The foreword introduces John Evelyn and describes the original manuscript in detail. John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist. In addition to his design at Sayes Court he also recognized as having built the first Italian Garden in England at his brother's estate, Wotton House in Surrey, which was also John's birthplace.

Geoffrey Keynes' own copy from his library. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. This work is an instructional manual on gardening. Evelyn wrote it with his own garden at Sayes Court in mind. He discusses fruit trees, kitchen gardens, evergreens, the caring of shrubs and many more plants. A bright copy of this work, which has been beautifully produced for the Nonesuch Press. In the publisher's original marbled paper binding. In original slipcase. Externally, very smart. Small dent to the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine. signed by author. book.
