Item Description: Harper & Bros, New York, 1960. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good binding. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dust jacket. Early Printing. Signed (Secretarial). Octavo. This copy has a secretarial presentation and an interesting provenance. Kennedy's 1960 book was sent by him to a prominent Virginia Democrat prior to the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles which nominated JKF for the Presidency. It is inscribed by a Kennedy secretary "To J. Clifford Miller, Jr. With regards and best wishes, John Kennedy". An accompanying letter (on Senate stationery and probably signed by autopen) states "Looking forward to seeing you in Los Angeles, and with every good wish, Sincerely, John Kennedy." While the senator was very anxious to secure the support of the Virginia delegation at the Los Angeles Convention, he failed to do so. The Virginia democrats were still under the sway of Harry Byrd and the old machine politics. Byrd in fact sought and received from Miller a list of businessmen throughout the state to whom he could send copies of a speech condemning the Democratic platform. Miller himself mailed to 14,000 voters in southern and central Virginia a copy of a letter from Adam Clayton Powell in which Powell stressed the Massachusetts senator's support for "massive scholarship assistance for African students" and a Fair Employment Practices Commission -- not issues that played well in Southern Virginia in 1960! On October 29, 1960 Clifford Miller released a statement that he and six other members of the Richmond City Democratic Committee intended to vote for the Nixon-Lodge Ticket (James R. Sweeney. "Whispers in the Golden Silence: Harry F. Byrd, Sr., John F. Kennedy, and Virginia Democrats in the 1960 Presidential Election.", Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Jan. 1991, Vol. 99, No. 1). Miller was very much a player in the Virginia Democratic Party, and this signed copy is a significant relic of the great President's failed efforts to win the support of conservative Virginia Democrats. Black cloth binding is slightly sunned at the spine; mated dust jacket shows typical edgewear but presents well in its mylar cover. Very Good binding / Very Good dust jacket. Item Description: No binding. One page typed letter dated 16 March 1950 on Kennedy's Congress of the United States stationery Signed ("John Kennedy"). Folded as mailed, two tiny stab holes from a removed staple, else fine. A letter sent while Kennedy was a Representative from Massachusetts' 11th District, and co-signed by his cousin, and colleague in the House, James C. Auchincloss, Congressman from New Jersey, to other House colleagues. The letter urges them to sign a discharge petition so that the Home Rule for the City of Washington bill can be brought to the floor of the House for a vote during the current session of Congress, and it eloquently if briefly pleads the case. According to the text, this letter was accompanied by a document listing 25 reasons why the Congressmen should vote for the act (presumably the reason for the staple holes) but this has been lost. A little smear to the fountain pen ink on the letter "J," but a bold, clean, and genuine signature, with the "oh" linkage of the first name clearly matching Kennedy's style of this period (as opposed to that of his secretaries). Item Description: 1961. No Binding. Book Condition: Please See Description. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. KENNEDY, JOHN. (1917-1963). Thirty-fifth president of the United States. DS. ("John F. Kennedy"). 1p. Folio. Washington, D.C., June 12, 1961. Appointing World War II veteran and lawyer ANTHONY B. AKERS (1914-1976) ambassador to New Zealand. Countersigned by Kennedy's Secretary of State DEAN RUSK (1909-1994, "Dean Rusk"). The United States and New Zealand became allies during World War II when they fought against the Japanese. In 1951, their alliance was formalized with the Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty (ANZUS), signed in San Francisco and assuring that "The Parties will consult together whenever in the opinion of any of them the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened in the Pacific." The ANZUS signatories fought together during the Korean and Vietnam War, with New Zealand's participation in the latter conflict especially controversial. Kennedy himself was the son of America's ambassador to Britain and a World War II naval war hero. In 1945, Kennedy became a reporter for the Hearst newspapers, covering the San Francisco conference that led to the creation of the United Nations. Shortly thereafter, he decided to enter politics and, in 1946, he won a seat in the House of Representative to which he was reelected twice. In 1952, Kennedy became a Senator from Massachusetts and in the presidential contest of 1960, he defeated Vice President Richard Nixon to become the youngest elected U.S. president. His tenure was dominated by issues relating to Communism, nuclear weapons proliferation, American involvement in Vietnam, and the struggle for civil rights, but was cut short when he was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Akers remained ambassador through August 1963, when he was succeeded by General Herbert B. Powell. Headed by an engraving of an eagle in flight holding the American flag in its talons. Complete with original paper seal. Mounted and affixed to its original matte. Boldly signed in jet-black ink by the president.* All our items are sent via Federal Express.
