Book Description: Scribner, Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A., 1997. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Fine copy in a like dust jacket, signed by John Cronin on the front free end paper. In the 1960s the Hudson River, under threat from polluters and energy concerns but beloved by its shoreline residents and local fishermen, became one of the United States' first major environmental battlegrounds. Out of those early legal wrangles emerged some important environmental More. This book reveals something about the organization, and even more about the history of the Hudson and environmentalism in America, from John Winthrop to Newt Gingrich, and quite a bit, too, about the upbringings--glamorous (who'd have thought keeping a pet seal in your swimming pool would lead to activism?) and not-so-unusual--of its authors. Promising early chapters sketch out the exploitation of the river by industry and describe some of its colorful champions. (One of the most interesting here is Robert H. Boyle, the writer of a seminal account of the Hudson, The Hudson River: A Natural and Unnatural History, who comes off as a hero.) A terrific final section explains in accessible terms the basis for environmental law in the founding of our country. In between, this book sometimes falters under the weight of too much information. You can't fault these writers for the work they've done, or for the scattered gems of thoughtful information on the modern environmental movement, which make this book worth reading. Just be prepared to pick through some irrelevancies (did Bobby Shriver really bring a leopard tortoise home for Robert Kennedy Jr. from Kenya in a suitcase?) to get to the heart of this unusual book. --Maria Dolan. Book Description: Washington, 1962. unbound. Interesting and deceptive grouping of three items sent out by the Kennedy White House which caused great confusion in regards to verifying "authentic" John F. Kennedy autographs. In November 1962, autograph collector Henry A. Wihnyk sent the White House a souvenir copy of President John F. Kennedy's ultimatum to Chairman Khrushchev, requesting that the President sign it. Approximately three weeks later he received a letter from Evelyn Lincoln, President Kennedy's Personal Secretary, which stated in part: "The President has received your letter and he has asked me to express his gratitude for your generous remarks.although your copy of his message is returned unsigned, I am happy to enclose an autographed White House card which comes with the President's cordial greetings." This lot includes the letter and "signed" White House card measuring 2.5 x 4 inches that Evelyn Lincoln graciously enclosed. Also included is a copy of a typed letter signed measuring 10 x 8 inches on "The White House" letterhead, January 24, 1964, from Lawrence F. O' Brien, former Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy, to United States Senator Kenneth B. Keating, in part: ".I have received your letter of January 23 enclosing a letter from Mr. Henry A. Wihnyk.I am enclosing a White House card bearing a facsimile of President Kennedy's signature. The fact that this is a facsimile reproduction is stated on the card. The signature Mr. Wihnyk was fortunate enough to obtain is genuine. It was Evelyn Lincoln's custom to keep photographs and other articles which the President was asked to sign in one place in his office, and whenever he had a few moments from his official duties, he was very glad to autograph them." Unfortunately the "signed" White House card that Evelyn Lincoln sent Mr. Wihnyk is in fact a printed card that she herself commissioned and had reproduced in the hundreds. This item is identified in Charles Hamilton's acclaimed volume "The Robot that helped to make a President" as Secretary 1-D (illustrated). Also included in this volume are quotes and reproductions of letters by Evelyn Lincoln and Larry O' Brien swearing to the authenticity of secretarial and autopen examples of the President's handwriting. Very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 220601

Book Description: Harper & Bros, New York, 1960. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good binding. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dust jacket. Early Printing. Signed (Secretarial). Octavo. This copy has a secretarial presentation and an interesting provenance. Kennedy's 1960 book was sent by him to a prominent Virginia Democrat prior to the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles which nominated JKF for the Presidency. It is inscribed by a Kennedy secretary "To J. Clifford Miller, Jr. With regards and best wishes, John Kennedy". An accompanying letter (on Senate stationery and probably signed by autopen) states "Looking forward to seeing you in Los Angeles, and with every good wish, Sincerely, John Kennedy." While the senator was very anxious to secure the support of the Virginia delegation at the Los Angeles Convention, he failed to do so. The Virginia democrats were still under the sway of Harry Byrd and the old machine politics. Byrd in fact sought and received from Miller a list of businessmen throughout the state to whom he could send copies of a speech condemning the Democratic platform. Miller himself mailed to 14,000 voters in southern and central Virginia a copy of a letter from Adam Clayton Powell in which Powell stressed the Massachusetts senator's support for "massive scholarship assistance for African students" and a Fair Employment Practices Commission -- not issues that played well in Southern Virginia in 1960! On October 29, 1960 Clifford Miller released a statement that he and six other members of the Richmond City Democratic Committee intended to vote for the Nixon-Lodge Ticket (James R. Sweeney. "Whispers in the Golden Silence: Harry F. Byrd, Sr., John F. Kennedy, and Virginia Democrats in the 1960 Presidential Election.", Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Jan. 1991, Vol. 99, No. 1). Miller was very much a player in the Virginia Democratic Party, and this signed copy is a significant relic of the great President's failed efforts to win the support of conservative Virginia Democrats. Black cloth binding is slightly sunned at the spine; mated dust jacket shows typical edgewear but presents well in its mylar cover. Very Good binding / Very Good dust jacket.
