Wraps. Condition: Good. First printing. First printing. [2], [1]-xx, [2], 244 pages. 7 7/8 inches by 10 1/4 inches. Softcover wrappers (softcover). Marbled grey printed background with green border, lettering, and microscope illustration. The first printing of the second and best edition. 475 figures, mostly black and white photos of instruments. Page edges spotted, previous owner bookplate on front flyleaf. A sound working copy. Wraps. One of the standard references in the field. The microscope collection documented here is very diverse, having been started by Lieutenant John S. Billings, a medical officer of the US Army, and curator of the Army Medical Museum from 1883 to 1893 and extended through donations and acquisitions in the years since. It is very helpful for dating unknown microscopes by form, useful for collectors, dealers, and historians. This second edition contains an additional 32 pages of microscopes added to the collection since 1967. The many, many photographs, descriptions of each instrument (including dimensions) make this an essential reference for the collector, dealer, or historian.

Edmund Husserl, "The Life-World and Theoretical Praxis"; 2. Paul Ricoeur, "Work and the Word"; 3. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, "The Philosopher and Sociology"; 4. Alfred Schutz, "Concept and Theory Formation in the Social Sciences"; Part II: INDIVIDUAL ACTION AND SOCIALITY 5. Jean-PaulSaretre, "Existential Psychoanalysis"; 6. Mikel Dufrenne, "The Subject as Social"; 7. Maurice Natanson, "The Nature of Social Man"; 8. Alfred Schutz, "The World of Contemporaries as a Structure of Ideal Types"' Part III: FREEDOM, RESPONSIBILITY, AND HUMAN DIGNITY 9. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, "Freedom"; 10. George A. Schrader, "Responsibility and Existence"; 11. Gabriel Marcel, "Human Dignity"; Part IV: THE EXISTENTIAL CONDITIONS OF POLITICS 12. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, "A Note on Machiavelli"; 13. Paul Ricoeur, "The Political Paradox"; 14. John Wild, "The Need for a Philosophy of Democracy"; 15. William Leon McBride, "Voluntary Associations: The Basis of an Ideal Model, and the 'Democratic' Failure"; Selected Bibliography, pp. 429-444. Gray textured or faux-leather boards with brilliant silver lettering on spine. Tight binding (NO cracks); sharp corners (NO curls or bumps); NO remainder marks. Clean text, Dustwrapper did its job--only flaw is previous owner name and purchase date at top right ffep. Brown dustwrapper not price-clipped ($12.50) title lettering in white across top front cover, above Contributors' list in smaller black letters, above editor name lettering in white; large eye-dazzling circular illustration of man's profile in alternating sky blue and black repetition, for 360 degrees, on lower 2/3 front cover; spine sunned to diminished brown, but all lettering in white and black still sharp and distinct, eminently readable; some wear across spine ends and nugatory wear at corners: all these peccadilloes have been backed by Archival tape and dustwrapper now in Brodart mylar which graciously forgives. Solid copy, looking little read, if at all, in that unusual, lovely gray leather or faux-leather binding. The way to read a Classic in this ostensibly little-explored field.
