Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. RARE BELL RINGING VOLUME - THIRD EDITION OF 1810 - 1812 - IN SUPERB QUARTER LEATHER BY THE RENOWNED BOOK BINDER PAUL DELRUE AND HIS PARTNER ADAM JURKOJC : For most of the eighteenth century the basic text book used for instruction in change ringing was J. D. & C. M.'s Campanalogia Improved. First published in 1702, it still fell far short of what the Exercise needed, and that need was not fulfilled until the publication in 1788 of Clavis Campanalogia or A Key to the Art of Ringing, a book generally referred to in ringing circles as the Clavis. Co-authored by Thomas Jones, John Reeves, and Thomas Blakemore. The title has a complicated publication history and is expertly considered in the journal The 'Bell Ringing World Ltd' - issue of August 1st 2008. This copy is likely to be the Third Edition which has considerable additions and published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown. A Key to the Art of Ringing is largely held to have been published between 1810 { British Museum } and 1812. Printed by J.Raw of Ipswich. Both the second and third editions are very similar, and both were undated. The author of the article in question states "I have so far avoided the question of when the undated second and third editions were actually published". { Data taken and paraphrased in part, from the Journal referred to above }. Whichever edition this one is, it is very rare. Tightly bound in a fine binding, contents very secure, pages very good, but with sporadic foxing evident. xx, 283 p. Notes : Engraved t.-p. Introduction (Account of the formation, origin and history of bells): p. iv-xviii. "A list of peals of ten and twelve bells": p. 269-270.
