Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Two sketchbooks. Both are small oblong quartos. The images are largely watercolors, but with some ink, gouache, and other media. 1. Spiral bound cardboard ("Windsor Wire Bound Sketch Book"). Modest stain and some ink notes on front cover, very good or better, internally fine. Spanning the period of 1964-1965. 16 images including several watercolors, many of Niagara Falls. Several are signed and dated. 2. Red Cloth. Modest wear and small stains, very good, internally fine. Spanning 1984-1985 (Hand-lettered on spine "Anita Kushner 1984-85"). Each of the 78 pages are used for images, often double-paged, and the vast majority are highly accomplished watercolors. Most are signed. The topics are largely impressionist images of Israeli scenes made after she emigrated, many in the area of Beit Shemesh. Her continued development from the earlier album is obvious. Anita Kushner (1935-2011) was born in Pennsylvania and studied art in Philadelphia, later emigrating to Israel where she lived in the city of Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem. She exhibited in over 30 solo shows in museums and galleries in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Israel, including at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Israeli Art, Museum of Modern Art in Haifa, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. She was the sole artist whose work was displayed at the home of Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin during the historic signing of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979. As recently as 2012 her art was exhibited at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art to commemorate Women's History Month. The watercolors presented here are especially impressive.

First editions of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Octavo, 2 volumes, original cloth. Each volume is signed by Tony Kushner on the title page. Each are fine in fine dust jackets. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. Tony Kushner's most famous work, a self-described "gay fantasia" describes an angel crashing to earth to summon a gay man dying from AIDS from his sick bed as a kind of prophet. The story takes place in the mid 1980's, when young gay men were expected to tend to the ill among them, while simultaneously facing their own mortality. "I struggle with the question of whether there is or there isn't anything beyond this material world, and I've never found an answer that feels in any way definitive. I can't leave the question alone either." It was made into an Emmy Award-winning HBO film directed by Mike Nichols. This two-part epic, subtitled "A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," has received hundreds of performances worldwide in more than twenty-six languages.

A statement in the book reads: "Tony Kushner is currently developing Part Two: Perestroika with the Eureka Theatre company and the Mark Taper Forum. Angels in America Parts One and Two will receive its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in the 1992-3 season." The British premiere of Part One took place in a Royal National Theatre Production at The Cottesloe Theatre on January 23, 1992. Kushner's warm inscription is dated within the first week of the production: "1/29/92 To.w/ much love & admiration - Tony". Included with the book is the 8-page original program for the British Premiere. The 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide program was designed by Michael Mayhew and Shima Hyde with a cover illustration by Lo Cole. An introduction by Tony Kushner is included in which he writes: "What was originally intended to be one play has grown into two, or rather into one very long play, the first half of which, Millennium Approaches, may be viewed independently. I have recently completed the second half, Perestroika, which continues the stories of the characters from Millennium. Since the writing was funded by a Federal grant, I felt the play ought to have a National dimension, and as it was a considerable sum, I wanted to give the taxpayers their money's worth.".

This two-part epic, subtitled "A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, " has received hundreds of performances worldwide in more than twenty-six languages.Tony Award winner Tony Kushner celebrates his birthday July 16. Kushner is perhaps best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. Millennium Approaches, the first part of the two-play epic, directed by George C. Wolfe, opened on Broadway at the Walter Kerr May 4, 1993. Starring Joe Mantello, Stpehen Spinella, and more, the drama was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning four, including Best Play.In fall 1993, Angels in America: Perestroika joined Millennium Approaches at the Walter Kerr, where the two halves played in repertory. After opening November 23, 1993, Perestroika would go on to earn six Tony Award nominations, winning three, including Best Play.Set in 1980s New York City, Angels in America tells the stories of a gay man who is abandoned by his lover when he contracts the AIDS virus, and a closeted Mormon lawyer, whose marriage to his pill-popping wife stalls. Other characters include the infamous McCarthy-ite lawyer Roy Cohn, Ethel Rosenberg, a former drag queen who works as a nurse, and an angel. The gay fantasia returned to Broadway 25 years later, opening at the Neil Simon Theatre March 25, 2018, in a Marianne Elliott helmed-production. The revival, starring Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, Lee Pace, and more, earned 11 Tony Award nominations, winning three, including Best Revival.
