Seller: Alcuin Books, ABAA/ILAB, Scottsdale, AZ, U.S.A.
Japanese Sewn Paper. Condition: Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. viii, 247p. owner's signature (Dr. [Henrietta?] Faxon, December 30, 1938). Old faded price stamp on foot of book. Printed by J J Augustin in Germany. The work is the most important single work on the Ojibway of Western Ontario discussing the period of youth involving sexual promiscuity as was the case of their elders, the limits of marriage (though not admitting those involving incest), and the roles of work for the men and women. Alcohol was a major factor in social life often leading to orgies. Dr. Landes discusses the role of bravery where risking one's life in a serious manner is a path of recognition, polygamy is only present where the wife approves. Celibacy is forbidden and the young girl who does not giver herself to a man's desires is mocked. The last chapter deals with life histories where, in detail, the delusions ranging from deviancy to madness show how Ojibway society deals with those who produce more conflict than peace. A remarkable study that is well-written and a testimony to the serious research conducted by women anthopologists in an era when "polite" society pretended that sex did not exist.
