A masterpiece of edition technique, a seminal work for all subsequent sources editions is the opus magnum by Felix Liebermann, the brother of the famous artist Max Liebermann. Felix Liebermann (1851-1925), German scholar who worked particularly on early English law. His great work was Die Gesetze der Angelsachsen 3 vols. And he worked on the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. The Anglo-Saxon period of English history extends from A.D. 449 to 1066. It covers three epochs. The first was from 449 to 800 when the country was settled by bands of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, who founded small states, which gave way to the three larger states of Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria. In 800 Wessex became supreme. The second epoch, 800-1017 witnessed the invasion of the Danes who for a time seemed likely to conquer England until Alfred pushed them back and by treaty with Guthrum kept them to the north and east of a line from London to Bedford and the north. In the tenth century England was organized under Alfred`s successors. But the Danes came and in 1017 Cnut became King of England. In the epoch 1017-1066 rule was divided between Danes and the dynasty of Wessex. Liebermann, who was awarded a doctorate honoris causa in Munich, Oxford and Cambridge, received the commission for his main work from the Munich Academy of the Sciences in the name of the Savigny Foundation. Liebermann dedicated over 30 years of his life to this edition: The work is one of the most fantastic editions in the world, produced with all the means of modern edition technique, from foreign material representing no less than the triumph of Waitz's Monumenta Germaniae Historica school. (E. Heymann, obituary for F. Liebermann, ZRG germ.A. 46 (1926). Among the West Germanic legal monuments, Anglo-Saxon deliverance history plays a special role as the only group of sources written in the vernacular. Both people's law and king's law are dealt with in detail, whereby a formal distinction was unknown in Anglo-Saxon law. The period of the legal sources covered extends from the 7th to the 12th century, the most well-known document is probably the Quadripartitus, written in two parts but left incomplete at the beginning of the 12th century.
