Illustrated with forty-five engravings on wood from designs by Jane E. Benham, Birket Foster, and John Gilbert. Fifth edition. Evangeline is an epic poem published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians. It became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime. It remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Bound by Leighton, Son and Hodge with label to rear pastedown. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown and initial ink stamp to rear free endpaper. Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, smart with slight wear to extremities and the odd slight mark. Hinges slightlystrained. Internally,generally firmly bound but occasionally slightly strained.
