Item Description: 1970. Hardcover. Autograph album. Oblong 12mo. Red leather album with "Autographs" in gilt on front board and blank pages. Each of the pages has been careful and artistically folded (as issued?), when a page was used it was unfolded. Ownership signature of Kira Vivian, daughter of Civil Rights pioneer C.T. Vivian, Blackstone Ranger, Freedom Rider, and one of the chief lieutenants of Dr. King during the Civil Rights Struggle. Inscribed by Kira Vivian to herself on the front fly, in girlish fashion. Leaves are creased where they've been unfolded, else condition overall is fine. Most of the signatures are directly on the pages of the album, a few inscriptions are tipped or laid in.Interspersed with a few autographs of the young teenage Kira's school friends are the Inscriptions and Autographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Fanny Lou Hamer, Charles Billups, and James Bevel (Director of Direct Action and Director of Nonviolent Education of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Director of the Selma Movement). A visceral artifact of the struggle for Civil Rights, compiled at a time when the outcome was by no means assured. It would be difficult to capture the immediacy of the Movement so completely in a single object. Bookseller Inventory # 396289

Item Description: [Japan, 1934. Book Condition: Fine. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934, joined by Babe Ruth, his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor, intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms, and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement. The present letter, written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan," is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother, with whom he was very close.Translation of the presentation letter:Dear Mr. Gehrig: "I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So, I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking, but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought, I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono,' not-so-fine a thing, a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you, Mr. Gehrig, 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November."[With:] 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library. From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick, a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother, Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip (which sold for over $500,000 at auction in 2011), a signed baseball, and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany, N.J., son of Ruth Martin Quick, a friend of Lou Gehrig Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Bookseller Inventory # 300422

Item Description: 1956. Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. circa 1956. FIVE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED AND ONE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY WILLIAM MAXWELL TO MARY LOU ASWELL. 6 Near Fine letters with fold creases. Letters ranging in size from 5 x 7 inches and 7 x 10 inches on The New Yorker cream colored stationary to 8 1/2 x 11 inches on cream or gold colored paper. Aswell was a longtime New York City editor, as well as the widow of Edward Aswell, Thomas Wolfe's last editor at Harpers. Affectionate and friendly letters, some dealing with writing and personal matters. One letter describes a visit from Eudora Welty. Another tells of his arrival and stay in France. Still another of a more personal nature talks of Maxwell working on a doll house around Christmas while his wife is preparing white icing to be used as "snow" on the witch's candy house. William Keepers Maxwell, Jr. (August 16, 1908 - July 31, 2000) was an American editor, novelist, short story writer, essayist, children's author, and memoirist. He served as fiction editor for "The New Yorker" from 1936 to 1975. (Wikipedia). Bookseller Inventory # 49233

Item Description: Tucson, AZ: May 13, 1967., 1967. Book Condition: Fine. - sc Small quarto [9-3/4 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide]. 1-1/3 single- spaced typed pages on olive green Loujon Press letterhead. Dated "5/13/67". Boldly signed in red ink "Jon (& Louise) Webb". Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. A wonderful letter addressed to a writer, in which Webb regrets that he cannot include the scripts which he has sent him in his literary review Outsider #4. Webb then launches into a poignant description of the terrible financial difficulties facing the press: ".We went broke doing a few books from going overboard on format, and now hope only from the Miller book to get a press to replace the one we've got which has done its last job. / We need an angel, and we know one will pop up eventually, but we need one now. We feel pretty sure we'll have enough to make the initial payment on the press, but there'll be a lot of paper, ink and new type, and other things that cost plenty, for we use the best stock in our printing, best everything. That always kills profit. / Rare book dealers are now making dough on our productions. Gotham Book Mart and others sell first 3 issues of the Outsider for 17.50 for the set of 3, and we're out of #1 and #3, so can't sell a set to any one."Jon Edgar and "Gypsy Lou" Webb founded the Loujon Press in the French Quarter of New Orleans in 1960. The press's literary review the Outsider was hailed by the Village Voice and the New York Times as one of the best of its day and featured such authors as Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Creeley, Denise Levertov and Walter Lowenfels. Outsider #4, referred to in the letter, was eventually combined with Outsider #5 and was the last issue published. The press also published two collections of early poetry by Bukowski, and books by Henry Miller. The Miller book mentioned in the letter is "Insomnia", published in 1970. Item Description: Circa [1918]. [1918], 1918. Book Condition: Very good. - sc - A 10 inch high by 8 inch wide sienna toned photograph of the silent movie star by the photographer "White". The image portrays the handsome young man, from the chest up, his right elbow resting on a desk or table with his hand to his cheek. Posed in three quarter profile, the actor is attired in an attractively fitted dark jacket & tie over a striped white shirt. Signed in burgundy red ink along the bottom of the photograph. The autograph, signed in large part across the darker portion of the image, is legible but with weak contrast. The corners of the photograph are slightly creased or bumped. Else, minor flaws only. The son of a Dutch military general, the silent screen star and stage actor Lou Tellegen (1881-1934) was a boxer, trapeze artist and nude model for Rodin before finding fame. An eager stage actor, he performed in Italy with Eleanora Duse when was discovered by the great Sarah Bernhardt. Indeed, he made his motion picture debut alongside Bernhardt in "La Dame au Camelias" and was soon snapped up by Hollywood. He married four times, including once to Opera star Geraldine Farrar. His career faded after his face was damaged in a fire when he fell asleep smoking on Christmas 1929. He was diagnosed with cancer and, as a guest in the Cudahy Mansion in 1934, locked himself in the bathroom, reportedly shaved and powdered his face before committing suicide by stabbing himself seven times with a pair of scissors. It is rumored that he did so surrounded by newspaper clippings of his career. Bookseller Inventory # 33088
