Item Description: William Morrow & Company, New York, 1975. Hardcover. Edited by Madeleine Stern. Small 4to. Red paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. xxxiii, 277pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good/very good. Slight bit of mild jacket age toning and edgewear. A tight and attractive second printing of this quartette of pseudonymously published Alcott potboilers: "Behind a Mask, or a Woman's Power," "Pauline's Passion and Punishment," "The Mysterious Key and What It Opened" and "The Abbot's Ghost, or Maurice Treherne's Temptation." Stern's introduction showing how she discovered these thrillers published under the name "A.M. Bernard" in long-forgotten weeklies is riveting. A decorative-edged archival bookplate on the front flyleaf is signed boldly by her in black ballpoint and also by Leona Rostenberg in black fineline. Rostenberg was Stern's long-time partner in the acclaimed antiquarian bookselling firm Rostenberg and Stern, and together they authored many books about the book trade; Rostenberg played a key part in Stern's research on Alcott. Item Description: The Limited Editions Club by Clarke & Way in New York, 1967. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. Yellow/green flowered stitched cover. Very tight. Very gently opened, if ever read. 7" x 10". Previous owners nameplate on inside cover. Light yellow/green slipcase Near Fine with some overall fading. Glassine torn on spine. With an Introduction by Edward Weeks. Illustrations by Henry C. Pitz and signed by the artist on the rear colophon page. Copy #128 of a limited fifteen hundred. From the introduction "It is clear that Little Women is a dramatization of her life in Concord before the war. Autobiography provides the warmth and the intimacy of the background, but it is Louisa's gift as a storyteller that has made the book live for a century .the four young girls are constantly battling against odds in strange territory, the strange territory being the adult world which in spite of Mrs. March's excessive advice is forever producing unforeseen problems .Louisa's great contribution to perceive that good little girls can frequently tease each other, that they can quarrel, neglect their studies, fly into tantrums, and at times be charming. In their humanness they were rather ahead of their time." We, at Coalesce Bookstore, thank our customers and supporters, acknowledging that what we do would not be possible were it not for each of you. Books over 2.2 lbs require additional shipping cost outside US, approximately $40USD ($25USD for Canada). Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # RS.ALLO.women.1967.6

Item Description: Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1886. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this important Alcott novel, SIGNED BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT on the title page -- in the first state mentioned in BAL with the closed page block bulking at 1 1/16 inches. (The second state mentioned in BAL is made of thinner paper and bulks at 1 inch.) A Sequel to Little Men, "Jo's Boys" is one of Alcott's best-known works, the others being "Little Women" and "Little Men". The three works together comprise what is generally called the Little Women series. Alcott based the character "Jo" on herself and in "Jo's Boys" Jo's children have grown up and now face real world problems and troubles. Set ten years after Little Men, the novel follows the Plumfield boys which Little Men introduced, focusing mainly on Tommy, Emil, Demi, Nat, and Dan, as well as Jo's sons Rob and Teddy, and, of course, Professor Bhaer. Others characters previously introduced in the series appear as well. Signed copies of the book are, in our experience, exceedingly scarce. The volume is mildly askew and shows some chipping to the spine ends, some fading to the front board where it meets the spine, some fading to the rear board, and wear to the board corners with a bit of rubbing through. The hinges feel as if they have been reglued, leaving some small damage to the pastedowns and each adjacent free endpaper. A Very Good copy of one of Louisa May Alcott's most important works and a highly-notable work of American Literature as well, SIGNED BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE.
