Hardback. Condition: Good. Square 8vo. 6 inches. pp ii, 40. 4 full-page & 15 colour printed illustrations. No date [1881] Lucy Lane Clfford, better known as Mrs. W. K. Clifford was a children's writer, novelist, journalist and dramatist - the wife of the philosopher William Kingdon Clifford. A contemporary review (THe Times 1883) says: "Most charming. The pictures are very pretty and the children represented in them like real children as they are to be seen in nurseries. The excellent stories of L.C. display a delicate fancy, and will be read with pleasure, for their literary merit, by grown people as well as children." The illustration style is very similar to Kate Greenaway but with a sweetness of its own Neat name on front endpaper dated 1898. Sound near vg copy slight cracked at rear hing, withe edges and corners rubbed.

The English children's writer, novelist, and dramatist Lucy Lane Clfford better known as Mrs. W. K. Clifford, was an English novelist and journalist, and the wife of the philosopher William Kingdon Clifford, whom she met whilst studying art in London. The Clifford's home became a gathering place for distinguished literary and scientific persons of the day, including Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, John Tynall, Thomas Huxley, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, James Russell Lowell, George Eliot, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Violet Hunt and Leslie Stephen.

Title page illustrated with colour vignette of little Boy & girl blowing Bubbles. Red & black Lettering. Endpapers have fine floral design. 40 p.pages, 6" Tall, 165g. Some edge wear and corners worn through to boards. Hinges sound and text-block firm. Gift inscription on back of ffep, dated 1881. No other inscriptions.
