VG near fine. harbback. no dj as published. no inscriptions. delightful clean copy. From the personal collection of a dealer/collector. The history paintings of Dexter Dalwood (born 1960) mix periods and styles, as he explores recent history and culture while quoting from works by artists as different as Sigmar Polke and Caspar David Friedrich. Dalwood often creates speculative depictions of historically significant locales, from the celebrity-driven--Michael Jackson s Neverland ranch, the greenhouse where Kurt Cobain s body was found, the site of Sharon Tate s murder--to the literary, as in Ezra Pound s Venice or Rimbaud s Africa. Dalwood also delights in contrasting two seemingly contradictory styles within the same painting, a supreme example of which is his portrait of Claudia Schiffer, in which a blonde woman gazing into a hand mirror, rendered precisely in the cartoon style of Roy Lichtenstein, is reflected back as a de Kooning Woman painting. This volume accompanies Dalwood s exhibition at the Kunsthaus CentrePasquArt in Switzerland. in French,German,English text.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 80 Seiten/pages, 33 ills. in color, 21,5 x 29,5 cm - Dexter Dalwood is a rare instance of an artist equipped to examine how history is constructed and interpreted through the making of paintings which are both intellectually challenging and visually seductive. The artist s juxtaposition of quotations and references from a broad and eclectic range of subjects is reflected in his transposition of the cut-and-paste of the collage technique to canvas. Not only does Dexter Dalwood possess a profound cultural and historical knowledge, he also perceives the connections between art history, politics, music, literature and personal experience, which he intimates with a remarkable lightness of touch. His paintings reward close observation, for the event or situation depicted is always reflected in the styles of painting that were developed during the periods referred to in the work.
