Item Description: Feminist Press c. 1977, Old Westbury, New York, 1977. Paperback. Book Condition: Good+. Front cover's lower fore corner is creased, 5" crease in the back cover, otherwise, except for a tendency toward curling, the binding is clean and sound, with minor wear. Lower fore corner of last few pages are creased, else contents are clean and unmarked. ; Photo illustrated cover is about the weight of posterboard. PAPER COVERS. Index. Chronology. SOCIOLOGY. The book is a series of letters written between 1910 and 1922 by a young Jewish prostitute, Maimi Pinzer, to Boston philantahropist Fanny Quincy Howe. They are a moving chronicle of the life of a poor, working woman in early 20th century America. As part of an 'historically inarticulate' subculture, prostitutes remain excluded from traditional accounts of history. Leaving few personal records of their own, prostitutes have often remained a footnote in the histories of famous men's flirtations. These MAIMIE LETTERS, written by a former prostitute, who also supported herself by other means available to working-class women of her period, is therefore a unique document and source in the history of women. Through Maimie's vivid and precise rendering, we are offered a unique view of the 'underside' of American culture and society, and of the options and obstacles which faced working-class women in their struggle for survival. ; 9" Tall; 439 pages.
