Zumsteg, who died in 2013 at the age of almost 90, studied and worked as a young man in Paris, where he met and befriended Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. Item Description: Abrams New York, 1961. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. DELUXE EDITION, with a colored etching with aquatint by Chagall. By MEYER, Franz. N.Y., Abrams. 1961 One of the 100 copies of the EDITION DELUXE with the book guarded in the original red cloth box, and a colored etching with aquatint, numbered in pencil, in a separate portfolio. The book is complete of dust jacket and includes over 1250 illustrations and mounted plates in colors, signed in pencil by Chagall in colophon, and numbered in print. The Etching comes in a separate portfolio in red cloth matching the box where the book is guarded, and is numbered in pencil on the left bottom corner. The book presents several stains on the paper, as same the etching that is stained but only on the edges. The red box and red portfolio are slightly worn with scratches but solid attached. In very good condition. Ref: Cramer books#48, Kornfeld#117. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # B-06-060029

Full-page color photographic portrait of Marc Chagall laid in. First leaf signed by the artist underneath the title. Published in June 1964 on the occasion of the exhibition of 38 ink drawings, watercolors and washes by Chagall at the Galerie Maeght, this issue is complete with its three original lithographs printed by Mourlot (wrappers, 1 double-page in color, 1 full page in b/w), 3 in-text drawings, and 23 b/w reproductions of Chagall's exposed artwork. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed, with tiny chipping. Corners and edges slightly creased and age-toned. Deaccessioned stamp on lower back cover. Text in French. Wrappers in overall good, interior in very good condition. 'Derrière le Miroir' accompanied each exposition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris France. The first issue appeared in 1946, The last #253 of the collection in 1982. DLM is born out of the passion of Aime and Marguerite Maeght. The first issues were intended by Aime Maeght to be spread among a large public, with original lithographs. 10,000 Copies were printed and distributed through kiosks. This failed completely and the remaining copies were sold by weight to finance the printing of issue 4, which was printed at only 1500 copies and was the catalog for the George Braque exhibition at the Galerie. Jacques Kober and Rene Char wrote the texts. This concept was continued in later issues combining great writers with great artists. In 1947, Adrien Maeght, joined the firm of his parents and assisted his father in the layout and execution. The artists created original lithographs to illustrate DLM. Mourlot did the lithographic printing and the text was printed by Union in issues 4-115. From 116-148, DLM was shot in the studios of Aime Maeght. Since 1960 an edition 'deluxe' was issued, on Arches paper, limited to 150 copies. Bookseller Inventory # 36481
