Tela. Condition: Buen estado. Dust Jacket Condition: Bueno. Col. El Libro Blanco de la Historia. 381 pgs.

A final installment in the late Soviet political prisoner Anatoly Marchenko's autobiography presents his long and tireless battle with the KGB and rare insight into the world of a human rights activist behind bars. Originally sent to the gulag as a common criminal, Marchenko finished his life there, both a victim of maltreatment and a respected human rights activist and author. Here he chronicles his months of "freedom" in Russia after an initial prison term and his reimprisonment after publication of his My Testimony (o.p.), the first major expose of post-Stalin labor camps. Unlike many dissidents, Marchenko was raised by illiterate provincial workers; his description here of the violence, brutality, and incomprehensible poverty of the Siberian countryside is even more shocking than what he says about labor camp conditions. Marchenko died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1986, after spending 20 of his 48 years in the Soviet penal system. His final memoir is moving, readable, and not at all self-righteous. Hardcover. xix, [5], 415, [1] p. 23 cm. Translation of Moi pokazaniia. Anatoly Tikhonovich Marchenko ( 23 January 1938, Barabinsk 8 December 1986, Chistopol) was a Soviet dissident, author, and human rights campaigner. He became one of the first two recipients (along with Nelson Mandela) of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought of the European Parliament when it was awarded to him posthumously in 1988. He became radicalized, and later turned to writing and politics, as a result of several periods of incarceration, starting in 1958; during his time in the labour camps and prisons he had studied, and began to associate with dissidents. He first became widely known through his book My Testimony, an autobiographical account of his then-recent sentence in Soviet labour camps and prison, which he decided to write after his arrival in Moscow in late 1966 after his second term of incarceration. It caused a sensation when it was released in the West in 1969, after limited circulation inside the Soviet Union as samizdat. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep. First edition. First edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
