Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. 382 pages. Publisher's Reprint Copy sent to the author for corrections, stamped on white blank: "This is your reprint copy. Please go through the book. Note any corrections necessary for a reprint and return this marked copy to your editor within the next three weeks. We will retain on file for a future reprint." Despite scoring out the stamp and writing "the hell with all this", Laurence had made seven corrections. She adds Jason's Quest to the list of her books; the six other emendations [spelling mistakes, punctuation, tense] are on pages 4, 6, 155, 207, 224, 289. The corrections were likely made in 1974 or '75 [she does not add her 1976 Heart of a Stranger], and the book evidently not returned to the editor. Only one of the noted corrections is made in the Bantam edition [poetry for poety p. 155], three of the noted corrections are made in the M&S 1995 mass market paperback [Colin for Colon [6], [poetry for poety p. 155], and them" for them [224]. The three corrections that Laurence notes that an editor would not notice remain unchanged. A particularly warm inscription to one Campbell Coulter on the title page mentions their "friendship at Trent", most likely referring to her winter/spring 1974 writer in residence term. Mr. Coulter died in 2008 age 56, having retired to Bridgetown, NS, after teaching high school for 27 years in Mississauga. Jacket is toned and chipped, with a few short closed tears; soiling to a few leaves; binding sound. A very pleasing association copy of Margaret Laurence's final novel, winner of the 1974 Governor General's Award. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, 144 pages. Bound in publisher's pictorial cloth binding, with gilt titling and pink and green vines to spine. Boards show mild wear and rubbing, and chipping to head and tail of spine. The front free end paper has cracking at gutter from glue. Inscribed by Dunbar on the second free end paper, with a selection from his poem Philosophy. A second ownership inscription, dated 1903, appears below Dunbar's. CX Consignment. Shelved in Case 0. Dunbar is considered the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance, and one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. He passed away of tuberculosis in 1906 at the age of 33, making any signed copies of his books, especially of his later works, incredibly scarce. This first printing of When Malindy Sings is signed by Dunbar, and includes an extensive inscription in Dunbar's hand, transcribing a selection from his poem Philosophy: "It's easy enough to titter w'en de stew is smokin' hot, But hit's mighty ha'd to giggle w'en dey's nuffin in de pot." Interestingly, he spells out "enough'" rather than using the published version '"nough" 1345988. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
