Set in post-colonial Buenos Aires, this political novel by the exiled Argentian writer Marmol was written in two parts and originally published in Uruguay in 1851; it is a semi-autobiographical account of living in Juan Manuel de Rosas's police state. Volume One only (the second part was not published until several years later, after the fall of Rosas and Marmol's return to Argentina. La novela está dividida en cinco panes y consta de setenta y siete capítulos. El hilo conductor del relato son las peripecias airosas de Amalia y Eduardo Belgrano. Eduardo es herido al intentar huir de Buenos Aires para incorporarse a los rebeldes que combaten contra Rosas. Su amigo Daniel Bello lo salva y le ofrece refugio en la casa de su prima, una joven viuda llamada Amalia. Los dos primos fingen ser partidarios de Rosas para poder luchar en su contra y salvar a Eduardo. Amalia y Eduardo se casan en la víspera de una proyectada huida pero mueren a manos de la Mazorca.
