Item Description: Printed by M. Flesher, for Rich: Royston, London, 1632. Full Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. Third Edition. Pp. [12], 631, [1] blank, [12] index. Added engraved architectural title by Martin Dr[oeshout], with the preliminary leaf (often lacking) "To the Beholder of This Title". Woodcut headpieces and initials. In 3 books, with 2 separate division titles (dated 1631) and continuous pagination. Bound in late 19th-century full crimson morocco by Zaehnsdorf, sides bordered by triple gilt fillets with gilt fleurs-de-lis cornerpieces, elaborate gilt inner dentelles, expertly rebacked to style with gilt ruled panels between raised bands with large central gilt fleurons, black morocco label lettered in gilt, Placard patterned marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Minor rubbing to extremities, occasional light marginal foxing and browning, faded ink signature to upper margin of engraved title, art deco bookplate designed by Ruth Reeves (1892-1966), painter, Art Deco textile designer and expert on Indian handicrafts (best known for the carpeting and wall fabrics of Radio City Music Hall) for Arthur B. Spingarn (1878-1971), American leader in the fight for civil rights for African Americans, and avid book collector. Overall an excellent copy in a seamlessly restored fine binding. First published in 1603, the classic English translation of Montaigne's Essays by John Florio [1553-1625] had an enormous influence on the literature and philosophy of the 17th century. Shakespeare, whose own copy of Florio's Montaigne is now in the British Library, drew on it for "The Tempest", "Hamlet", and other plays. It was also a source of inspiration for Ben Jonson, Robert Burton, Thomas Browne, and Francis Bacon, who developed the English version of Montaigne's new essay form. The engraved title by Martin Droeshout, who engraved the famous portrait of Shakespeare for the first folio, makes its first appearance in the present edition, as does the index. STC 18043. Size: Folio. Bookseller Inventory # 22142

Item Description: Berlin, Lagarde, 1793-1799., 1799. – Goed. IV 1, 587, 22. Fromm 18265. Bookseller Inventory # 11618

Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1842 Excerpt: . . . strange, but is conceived by the mediation of the senses; and the senses do not comprehend a foreign subject, but only their own passions: by which means fancy and appearance are no part of the subject, but only of the passion and sufferance of sense; which passion and subject arc different things; wherefore whoever judges by appearances judges by ano ther thing than the subject And to sny that the passions of the senses convey to the soul the quality of foreign subjects by resemblance, how can the soul and understanding be assured of this resemblance, having of itself no commerce with foreign subjects As they who never knew Socrates cannot, when they see his picture, say it is like him. Finally, there is no constant existence, neither of the objects being nor our own; both we, and our judgments, and all mortal things, are evermore incessantly running and rolling; and consequently nothing certain can be established from the one to the other, both the judging and the judged being in a continual motion and mutation. We lmve no communication with being, by reason that all human nature is always in the middle, betwixt being born and dying, giving but an obscure appearance and shadow, a weak and uncertain opinion of itself: and if, perhaps, you fix your thought to apprehend your being, it would be but like grasping water; for the more you clutch your hand to squeeze and hold what is in its own nature flowing, so. . .
