First Edition
First Edition, with the Morris portrait, and before explanatory text. Two lithographic views, two lithographic portraits, an engraved portrait of former Governor Samuel Morris by St. Memin, and woodcut of a fox. 1 vols. 8vo. The Start of Organized Fishing and Hunting in America. Milnor served for a number of years as secretary of the Schuylkill Fishing Company, America's oldest angling group, founded in 1732--indeed it claims to be the world's oldest social organization--and was a member of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club, the first organized hunt club in America, founded (across the river in New Jersey) in 1766. (He was also a member of Congress 1812-1820, and in 1829 was elected Mayor of Philadelphia). His well written accounts of both organizations are full of lively anecdotes, specific incidents, and reports of various methods of hunting and fishing, not to mention a number of illustrious and interesting individuals. These two classic works are usually bound together, as is the case here. Laid in is an envelope postmarked 1934 bearing the Schuykill device engraved on the verso. Westwood & Satchell p. 190; Sabin 49133; Phillips p. 265; Schwerdt IV, p. 66; Gee, Early American Sporting Books, pp. 46-47; Henderson, pp. 178-179; Howes M636; Wetzel p. 209; Bruns S74; Biscotti, Six Centuries, p. 256 Original pink cloth faded to tan, printed label on upper cover, covers a little rubbed and soiled and with the usual internal foxing, but a nice, crisp copy of a rare book. Bookplate. Half morocco clamshell box Two lithographic views, two lithographic portraits, an engraved portrait of former Governor Samuel Morris by St. Memin, and woodcut of a fox. 1 vols. 8vo First Edition, with the Morris portrait, and before explanatory text.

First Edition
Original Cloth. Condition: Near Fine+. First Edition of this early history of America's oldest angling society, Second Issue, with portrait of Gouvernor Morris by St. Memin inserted after Introduction. Bound with the first American book on fox hunting. 8vo (220 x 140mm): viii,127,[1]; [ii],56,[2,errata]pp, with lithographic frontispiece to each title and two lithographic portraits, of Robert Wharton and Jonas Cattell. Original salmon cloth (very skillfully rebacked), original paper title label printed in black to front cover. Housed in bespoke cloth chemise and slipcase with leather spine label. A collectible wide-margined example, first few quires moderately foxed (end sheets heavily so), else sporadic light spotting only; securely bound with rich impressions of the tissue-guarded plates. Copies with the portrait of Morris appear more uncommon than first issue copies, both in commerce and in institutional collections. American Imprints 2578-2579. Bruns S74 ("Almost priceless today, never offered except in later editions . . ."). Gee, p. 18. Howes M-636. Sabin 49133. Schwerdt IV, p. 66. Westwood & Satchell, p. 190 ("quaint and scarce book"). Henderson, p. 130. Milnor served years as secretary of the Schuylkill Fishing Company, America's oldest angling group, founded by Quakers in 1732, and was a member of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club, the first organized hunt club in America, founded (across the Delaware River from Philadelphia in New Jersey) in 1766. He was also a member of Congress (1812-1820) and mayor of Philadelphia (1829-30). These well written accounts are full of lively anecdotes, incidents involving illustrious individuals, and descriptions of various methods of hunting and fishing. [MILNOR, William]. Authentic Historical Memoir of the Schuylkill Fishing Company of the State in Schuylkill. From Its Establishment on That Romantic Stream, Near Philadelphia, in the Year 1732, to the Present Time. By a Member. Phila.: Judah Dobson, 1830. (Bound with :) Memoirs of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club, Near Philadelphia. Phila.: Judah Dobson, 1830. 1st ed., 1st issue. Illus. with five plates. 127, (2), 56pp. plus errata slip. Orig. cloth, neatly rebacked in matching material; some foxing, else a very good copy in a custom cloth folding box. Howes M-636. Henderson, p. 178. First edition, first issue of a desirable early American sporting book in unusually clean original condition: copies in the fragile original red linen boards with the paper cover label, in clean condition, are rarely seen. The Schuylkill Fishing Company, founded in 1732 and still in existence, is the oldest sporting club in North America. The earliest copies of the history do not contain the portrait of Gouvernor Morris by St. Memin, nor the reference to the portrait on page viii; both were added in later copies. The second title, which was issued with the fishing company history but was also available bound separately, is the first American book on fox hunting. The hunt took place near what is today Woodbury, Gloucester County, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from Philadelphia.

A reprint of a rare work, with a foreword by the sporting bookseller and authority on early American sport, Ernest R. Gee. This binding is similar to those executed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for the great Derrydale production of Woodward's Cherished Portraits, and may be counted as an unrecorded Deluxe binding. Gee advertised copies bound in this style as item 46 in his Catalogue number 10 (1927/1928) and it is probable that only a very small number of this edition were bound thus.
