L'originalité de ce colloque a reposé en grande partie sur sa méthodologie. Si les rencontres que psychanalystes et anthropologues avaient tenues par le passé ont été fortement marquées par des discussions épistémologiques, par exemple autour de l'opposition entre structure et histoire, cette rencontre-ci s'est constituée autour d'une méthode de travail nouvelle dans ce type d'échanges : il s'est agi, aussi bien pour les anthropologues que pour les psychanalystes, de discuter à partir du " matériau " de leurs pratiques respectives - clinique analytique pour les psychanalystes, matériel de terrain pour les anthropologues.
