Item Description: Seagull Books, 2013. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: For more than three decades, artist William Kentridge has explored in his work the nature of subjectivity, the possibilities of revolution, the Enlightenments legacy in Africa, and the nature of time itself. At the same time, his creative work has stretched the boundaries of the very media he employs. Though his pieces have allowed viewers to encounter the traditions of landscape and self-portraiture, the limits of representation and the possibilities for animated drawing, and the labor of art, a guide to understanding the full scope of his art has been available until now. For five days, Kentridge sat with Rosalind C. Morris to talk about his work. The result--"That Which Is Not Drawn"--is a wide-ranging conversation and deep investigation into the artists techniques and into the psychic and philosophical underpinnings of his body of work. In these pages, Kentridge explains the key concerns of his art, including the virtues of bastardy, the ethics of provisionality, the nature of translation and the activity of the viewer. And together, Kentridge and Morris trace the migration of images across his works and consider the possibilities for a revolutionary art that remains committed to its own transformation. "Thats the thing about a conversation," Kentridge reflects. "The activity and the performance, whether its the performance of drawing or the performance of speech and conversation, is also the engine for new thoughts to happen. Its not just a report of something you know." And here, in this engaging dialogue, we at last have a guide to the continually exciting, continually changing work of one of our greatest living artists. Item Description: Seagull Books London Ltd. Hardback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, The Eye of the Needle: Towards Participatory Democracy in South Africa, Richard Turner, Tony Morphet, Rosalind C. Morris, Described by Nelson Mandela as a source of inspiration, Richard Turner was a central figure in the white South African student movement and key in its radicalization. Turner acquired his doctorate at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he was inspired by the events of 1968, and returned to South Africa increasingly influenced by Steve Biko and the Black Consciousness movement. His work was forceful and revolutionary, causing him to be banned, confined to his home, and eventually assassinated by state security forces in 1978. Turner's most influential and incendiary text, The Eye of the Needle, is being returned to print at a critical moment in South African history, when many have turned their attention once again to Black Consciousness and a reconsideration of the Durban Moment. The Eye of the Needle is a largely utopian statement, advocating for the creation of a socialist society couched in the language of Christian ideology. Against the backdrop of contemporary labor disputes and the appearance of new unions and emergent calls for the re-radicalization of South African politics, Turner's work is newly relevant. Accompanied by Tony Morphet's contextualizing essays, the book provides readers with an excellent entry point for both historical reflection on 1970s South Africa and critical engagement with contemporary social justice. Item Description: Seagull Books London Ltd, United Kingdom, 2013. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 204 x 146 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. For more than three decades, artist William Kentridge has explored in his work the nature of subjectivity, the possibilities of revolution, the Enlightenment s legacy in Africa, and the nature of time itself. Though his pieces have allowed viewers to encounter the traditions of landscape and self-portraiture, the limits of representation, the possibilities for animated drawing, and the labor of art, a guide to understanding the full scope of his art has been unavailable until now. For five days, Kentridge sat with Rosalind C. Morris to talk about his work. The result - That Which Is Not Drawn - is a wide-ranging conversation and deep investigation into the artist s techniques and the psychic and philosophical underpinnings of his body of work. In these pages, Kentridge explains the key concerns of his art, including the virtues of bastardy, the ethics of provisionality, the nature of translation, and the activity of the viewer. And together, Kentridge and Morris trace the migration of images across his works and consider the possibilities for a revolutionary art that remains committed to its own transformation. Here, in this engaging dialogue, we at last have a guide to the continually exciting, continually changing work of one of our greatest living artists. Bookseller Inventory # AAS9780857421753
