Item Description: PHAIDON, 2010. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 'Fortunately, with Nan Goldin's photography, a certain kind of critical caution is entirely unnecessary. Nan and her photographs form a single whole, and those who look at them, in that moment when they really understand them, become irresistibly drawn into their world; they are interrogators, but at the same time, are being interrogated. The spectator must to some degree become an active participant in the taking of the picture, reconstructing what went before and the circumstances in which it was made. In other words, he or she must, for a brief moment, agree to become part of Nan Goldin's extended family.rite of mutual recognition.' Goldin 's work often breaks social taboos with its explicit exploration of relationships, sexuality, and eroticism. More recently, her images have shown the devastating effectgs AIDS has had on this community of friends. Illus., 56 color photographs. 128 p. Bookseller Inventory # 2131982

Item Description: Scalo, 0. softcover. Book Condition: New. Ten Years After Naples Nan Goldin The power in Nan Goldin's work is born out of her ability to document the drama in the mundane moments of life. As in her seminal book The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, the subjects of Ten Years After are Goldin's friends and she is expert at conveying the emotional charge she seems to feel around them. The photographs depict them at home in and around Naples, Italy, in 1986 and again in 1996. Cookie, Vittorio, and Daniele--to whose memory the book is dedicated--figure heavily in the earlier pictures. The images are of everyday life: the three friends walking a dog in the woods, Cookie alone in the bathtub, Cookie and Daniele casually posing as if for a quick snapshot. But Goldin's lens transforms these shots into sublime images. Cookie's bath is so drenched in yellow sunlight that viewers feel there's a chance they're peering into heaven. Rebecca at the beach holding an infant to her breast, with a towel draped over her head as a sun shield, is as lovely and intense as any depiction of the Madonna and child. When Goldin returns to Naples 10 years later, the three friends are gone, and more of Goldin's images are absent of people altogether. Color-saturated landscapes, building interiors, and introspective human subjects convey a strong sense of the passage of time and its effect on personal histories. The book is compact and the color photographs expertly reproduced on heavy paper stock. This design makes it very easy for readers to study both the photos and the accompanying writing, fittingly penned by the artist's friends and models Guido Costa and Cookie Mueller. --Jordana Moskowitz Paperback: 136 pages Publisher: Scalo Publishers; 1st Scalo Ed edition (April 1998) Language: English ISBN-10: 3931141799 ISBN-13: 978-3931141790 Product Dimensions: 7.9 x 7.9 x 0.5 inches Shipping Weight: 0.8Kg. Item Description: Scalo Verlag, Zürich (Zurich), Berlin and New York, 1995. Soft cover. Book Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated laminated stiff wrappers (published only in wraps). Edited by Guido Costa, Gigi Giannuzzi and Nan Goldin. Photographs by Nan Goldin. Texts by Guido Costa and Cookie Mueller. 142 pp. with 92 four-color plates. 8 x 8 inches. New. From the publisher: "Ten Years After is a tribute to Cookie Muller, her husband Vittorio, and his brother Daniele who all died of AIDS. It both commemorates times past and celebrates new found friendships and pleasures. Looking at these photographs the development and refinement of Goldin's photographs is more clearly evident than ever. Eschewing saccharine sentimentality Goldin has transfigured grief and struggle into serene beauty.". Bookseller Inventory # 100984
