Book Description: Thomas Allen, Toronto, 1923. Flexible Card Covers. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Toronto: Thomas Allen, 1923. First Edition. 12mo, 149 pp. Flexible card stock boards; scarce original colored woodcut paper dustjacket wrapped around original card covers; still rarer original matching gift box. Some chipping to VG jacket, two repairable cuts separating a piece of the otherwise VG+ gift box . Interior is immaculate, almost certainly never read; Fine. Rare in any form, this work of fiction by early - and now quite famous - Canadian women's rights activist Nellie McClung - is the story of some Canadian women who outwit the raucous local men in a small Alberta town on Christmas Eve. McClung was such a leader in Canadian Women's Suffrage that on October 18, 1999, she and four others from the movement were permanently honored in the form of five larger-than-life bronze statues (by Canadian artist Barbara Paterson) which were unveiled at Olympic Plaza in Calgary. A second set was unveiled on October 18, 2000, on Parliament Hill - an honor previously reserved for Fathers of Confederation, Canadian monarchs, and deceased prime ministers. Veyr difficult to find at all, nearly impossible to locate in its full woodcut pictorial jacketing and the matching gift box. L28. Bookseller Inventory # 000469

Book Description: No Binding. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 1940 and 1949. Two letters, as follows: Letter Number One. (1940) 2-page, fountain pen manuscript letter on embossed paper addressed to Jean Dawson, of St. Aidan's Church, Victoria. 18-line message congratulating Jean Dawson for managing a "Mother and Daughter Banquet" that McClung attended. With addressed envelope, apparently transmitted by hand. Letter Number Two. (January 16, 1949). 4-page ball point pen manuscript letter on embossed paper addressed to "Dear Billy" [Bill Levis, husband of Jean Dawson]. 56-line intimate, encouraging letter where by McClung refers to a letter of reference she provided (to the [UBC] Screening Committee) for Bill Levis's application to become a medical student at UBC's Medical School. She gives him much encouragement and support in his pursuit: "You have the character, disposition and personality to make an excellent doctor." McClung also comments on his marriage to Jean, his character, the travails of life, and more. It would appear the McClung knew "Billy" and "Jean" through their mutual association with St. Aidan's Church. William Hugh Levis appears to have been in the first medical class of UBC. COMES WITH The personal archive of photographs, albums, typed and manuscript letters previously owned by Jean Dawson and Bill Levis, including letters sent to Victoria during World War II when Bill Levis was in England, all related to life in Victoria, and people known to them through the Church, and otherwise. -One binder with photographs, snapshots and letters -Three personal scrapbooks, with many newspaper clippings, some of which relate to Bill Levis's participation as Flt. Lt. RCAF in the Burma campaign, as well as clippings and writings related to Jean and Bill. -Two photograph albums with vernacular snapshots taken during travel to the US, as well as the period before Bill Levis embarked for the war (the album originating in Powell River, B.C.) Nellie McClung letters are scarce. It is very unusual to find both a family archive that is associated with letters of one of the most famous Canadian women authors and activists. $950 for the collection: ($900 for the letters, and $50 for the family photographs and papers; to be sold as one lot). In 1927, McClung and four other women: Henrietta Muir Edwards, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby, who together came to be known as "The Famous Five" (also called "The Valiant Five"), launched the "Persons Case," contending that women could be "qualified persons" eligible to sit in the Senate. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that current law did not recognize them as such.
